An Extra $281 Shipping Charge?!?

Greetings eBay'ers-
I just received notice that eBay is charging my account an extra $281 for shipping. This after charging my buyer and me for a shipping label eBay issued - and which the USPS, at my local office, packed, weighed, taped and put in the next day's outgoing parcels.
Any suggestions from anyone who has dealt with something like this?

Mentor2 weeks agoAnytime USPS scans a problem where the label doesn't match the package an automatic credit or debit is applied. A picture is also taken of the package. This also happens even it the scan itself is in error, which does happen. In that case you have to file a dispute to have a human look at the picture and determine the problem and how to resolve it.
To dispute a shipping label adjustment:
Contact USPS directly:
Phone: 844-819-5187 or
Email: verifypostagehelp@usps.gov
If you email USPS, include this information:
Tracking number
The USPS Adjustment ID. You can find this at the top of the adjustment receipt
Detailed reason for the dispute
Your contact information, including name and email
You have 60 days from the date of the notification of the adjustment to file a dispute for a given transaction. Most responses can be expected in 2-5 business days.
If USPS finds that you have been adjusted in error, USPS will notify you and then you should see a credit for the correction directly into your Payment account.

NOTE: USPS is way behind sorting through their errors, be prepared to resubmit your claim and/or call them repeatedly. This has nothing to do with ebay or the postage provider.

If USPS charged you later for additional shipping, it was because the package was either
1) In the wrong USPS packaging
2) Weighed incorrectly
3) Measured wrong, or
4) USPS was wrong - you can appeal the upcharge if you are certain you are correct.
In the message from eBay with the charge, there is a link to appeal to USPS .
USPS will then review the weights and dimensions of your package by looking at the various photos and weights taken of your package while it was in transit.

Mentor2 weeks agoMost sellers of golf clubs, and anything more than 24 inches long, stopped using USPS to ship due to their surcharges for the length of the package, preferring to use Fed Ex or UPS because their charges for long packages are more reasonable.

OP2 weeks agoThanks for the reply. Makes sense. Shipping time was not an issue for my buyer so I simply used the service recommended by eBay as the least expensive.

Mentor2 weeks agoTwo questions here. First did the label or the QR code you brought to the post office match the dimensions of the box? Second was this just a plain brown box?
Golf clubs packages often not only get charged dimensional weight, but also if the box is too long there is an added surcharge for an oversized package.
Next if these were put in anything but a brown box, say a priority box that could cause a huge increase as well.

I used a plain, brown cardboard box for shipping golf clubs, obtained at my place of part-time employment - PGA Tour Superstore.
This is the fifth time I've shipped golf clubs -- sending or receiving -- and I've never seen an up-charge like this before.
The USPS agent said the same -- that the box was too long and might require an up-charge. She cut it down and re-taped it for me, re-measured it, and told me it was within the size requirements.
Still scratching my head.
What I need to know is how to appeal or dispute the charge.
Any suggestions?

Mentor2 weeks agoNeed more details as the Post Office does not do any packing and you supplied the label or QR code, which must match the type of box or service paid for. Did you by mistake put it in an overnight box, or was it oversized, or an irregular shap.
What was the Item Number?
What was the to Zip Code?
What box size and/or type of service was the label for?

It was a set of golf clubs.
eBay produced the shipping label and the buyer and I split the charge - $57.50 each.
The USPS clerk did indeed help me pack it, cutting down the box to fit the required length, taping it up, measuring and weighing it, postmarking it "Prepaid Mail", and tossing it in the back.
Don't see an item number but the box shipped ground regular mail (10 business days) to 06763.
