accepting an offer
Recently, I received an offer on one of my items and decided to accept it. Right after I clicked “Accept,†eBay displayed a message saying “Payment Processing.â€
Here’s where my confusion set in: the item still appeared as available in my store. As a new seller, I wasn’t sure if this meant the buyer had canceled, if there was a glitch, or if I just didn’t understand the process.
From what I’ve learned, once an offer is accepted, the buyer is expected to pay. In most cases, there’s no way to simply “cancel†an accepted offer the way you can retract a bid before an auction ends. However, if the buyer hasn’t paid yet, the order won’t be marked as sold, and the item may still appear in search results until payment clears.
If you’re new to eBay like me, the key takeaway is: don’t ship anything until you see the order marked as “Paid.†Sometimes payment takes a little while to process, especially if the buyer isn’t using instant payment. And yes — there are cases where a buyer simply doesn’t pay, in which case you can cancel the order after eBay’s waiting period and relist your item.

Allow me to explain and clarify some of what you are seeing. eBay recently changed how listings are handled and displayed after an offer is accepted but NOT paid for. They let the item remain live and active and if someone else comes along and buys the item at the list price before the offer recipient has paid then THEY get it and you ship to them.
You can consider turning Auto-pay on for Auctions and the Offer process near the bottom of this page if you want: Buyer management | eBay
There are two settings, one for Auctions and one for the Offer process.
What Auto-pay does is require a Buyer to provide a payment method BEFORE they place a bid on an auction or participate in the Offer process for either Sending or Accepting an offer. The payment method will be charged one hour after an auction ends or an Offer has been accepted by either party but they can change to a different payment method within that hour ... but either way they will be charged.
For myself I keep Auto-pay turned OFF. I sell a lot Auction style but have a low Unpaid item record and I do NOT use the Offer process, it just drives prices down.
