A seller wants a copy of my drivers license, I never had to provide that before. Is that appropriate

I cannot imagine any circumstance where you would need to provide anything to the seller about your identity.
What is the item you are trying to buy? (Just in case there is something unique that I am missing)
In general though, do not provide your DL to a seller, and I would report that seller to eBay.
