Trying to id
hello... hopefully this is the proper board... i just received a mixed bag, mostly coins, some jewelry, and this pin looks like it might not be typical costume jewelry... it's about 27mm and 4.5 grams, and looks like it might be silver plated... it's not heavy enough to be solid silver...
i haven't had any luck deciphering the markings on the back (the hallmark looks like a fish and says SITTER or SISTER or something like that - the mark looks double struck - and i can't make out the patent date at all) and figured i should let the experts take a look... BTW, any coin questions, please feel free to post in the Coins & Paper Money category under the Coins & Paper Money board... yep, same name... we LOVE to figure stuff out..!!

·9 months agoIf the mark were clearer you could read the word Sterling inside the fish The L after the fish is the giveaway. It is a Fishel Nessler & Co. piece, and it's probably antique.

·9 months agoYou know, I went back and looked. There are two different hallmarks from them that use the fish and the L. One has sterling inside the fish, the other has F.N. Co. inside. I think you'd have to figure out which version of their hallmark it is. But I think it's safe to say it is antique. It doesn't look like they existed much past the 1930's. It would be worth buying a bottle of tester acid to find out.

OP9 months agomuch appreciated... re: acid test, i've found that because of my color vision, or lack of, the silver acid doesn't help me... i've tested known good silver alongside known not silver, results look the same to me...
i think this is a better pic... looks like STER but double punched, kind of... definitely not F.N. Co., LOL
