I was going through my boxes of watches collecting dust. I found this watch in its original Seiko box marked $225. Of course, watch was dead and my first thought was; " What a waste?". Opened the backcase and replaced the 2016 cell , wow, lights are on. Oh well, surely I am going to list it on eBay. It's a quartz movement in working condition with original box. What could go wrong?
But I had to do some research. First help came from Terapeak research system. A quick research told me; this watch is going up in price, but why!? It's just an 80s Seiko quartz watch. I figured out later, things were not that simple as I thought them to be. Watch was just made famous by NASA's Space Shuttle astronauts wearing it in 1980s. Seiko's Rotocall became unofficial watch of U S space program in real time. So here are the specifications:
- Black and Red bezel(Coke) ref. A 829-6029
- Blue and Red bezel( Pepsi) ref. A 829-6019
- Dimensions are 37mm in diameter and 9mm thick
- Original on Coke bezel is Seiko Rubber Strap and Seiko Metal bracelet on Pepsi bezel
- Functions could be listed as showing Hour, Minute, Second, Day & Date, 12 or 24 hour Stopwatch with Lap Timer, Two channel alarm; Single Alarm and Daily Alarm, Multi Time Zone, Light, Hourly Time Signal
Black and Red bezel(Coke) ref. A 829-6029 insert should turn into orange if original to date
Now let's meet some early clients
Picture showing Mission Specialist Anna Lee Fisher M D( First Mom in space) wearing her Rotocall with its distinct colors
Here is an iconic picture of Payload Specialist Paul Desmond Scully-Power ( First Bearded-Man in space) wearing his Coke Rotocall
So this is what I've been working on this weekend. I thought, I should share this information with you guys.
Enjoy,
Happy hunting
