Can a seller in China list an item for sale, state they are in the United States in the listing, then have the item shipped directly to the buyer from a large store in the USA, with probably no possibility of return since the mailing label simply gives the retailer's address? Is it likely that this seller has some agreement with the retailer? Opinions?

Look at the return policy on the listing @melda58 . If the shipping location is from the US, then the return location also has to be in the US. If the listing has a buyer-pays return policy then just like any other remorse return, you would have to pay to return to the US address provided. If there's a problem with the item and you're filing a not as described claim, the seller either has to provide a prepaid return label or refund you without requiring a return.
I assume someone willing to break the rules and buy from some place like Home Depot or Walmart and have the item sent directly to you, they are probably not above opening a return request with the retailer and providing the retailer's return label to you.
If the seller is having items shipped from large retailers like that, as mentioned above, you can report them.

If they are buying from another retail site and having the items shipped, no, that's not allowed.

What you described is not allowed on eBay. No retailer will allow it either if they knew what was going on. There's no agreement.
Sellers who want to drop ship need to obtain a contract with a wholesaler. Then there's an agreement.

Quick answer no, it's supposedly not allowed here but the fact is many do.
Should it be NAD then you return it to the seller. The retailer's address has nothing to do with YOUR transaction. Period.

The item was as described, but even if it weren't, how could it be returned? It wasn't purchased from the retailer so no receipt, and the seller is in China. The item is HUGE, and would cost 5x what it's worth to ship anywhere.
Thanks all for your quick replies.

Many things happen here that are not suppose to!, It's a matter of getting caught doing it.

If it HAD been NAD then the seller would have had to supply a return label. If they can't supply a return label then they either have to send you the $$ to pay for the return OR you ask ebay to step in and ebay makes them refund you.

Happens anyway. I bought from seller in Israel Thursday last week. Delivered from and by Walmart directly to my address on Friday. Left feedback. Seller furnished bogus UPS tracking number the day after delivery, Saturday, Ebay posted same. Marked delivered today in order details. The UPS tracking record never existed from seller to me and was furnished AFTER delivery had already been made.

If this is happening to you, you can report the seller.

A clever buyer could figure out how to put the ball in the seller's court.

In many cases those sellers will simply issue a refund without requiring the item be returned.
Baffling to me, how they can remain profitable that way...

Did you report it?

Thanks so much. I wrote the seller and asked how a return would work being he's in China and the item was sent from the US.
