eBay may place holds on your funds in certain situations to address disputes or take steps to keep eBay a safe marketplace. You can always check on the status of a payment by going to the Payments tab in Seller Hub or Payment options in My eBay.

Why are my payouts sometimes subject to a hold?

Here are the common types of holds we may place on payouts due to account verification issues:

  • Registration holds: We may place a hold on payouts if we identify a discrepancy with the information you provided at registration.  We will notify you of the hold and request additional information from you by email. For more information about the way eBay verifies your identity see Registering as a seller.
  • Compliance holds: eBay compliance policies are designed to to protect buyers and sellers and comply with anti-money laundering laws. If your account has a payout hold for compliance reasons, we may notify you by email and request more information about the transaction
  • Performance holds: We may hold your payouts if we identify unusual activity associated with your account, such as increased customer claims, a sudden change in your selling activity, late deliveries, or negative buyer feedback.

  • Transaction holds: Occur when a hold is placed on a specific buyer transaction. Common reasons for transactions to be placed on hold include an insufficient selling history, the occurrence of unusual selling patterns, or if the transaction involves high priced items.

  • Payment dispute or eBay Money Back Guarantee holds: Occur when a hold is placed on funds due to an issue  reported by a buyer. For example, if an item is significantly not as described in the listing description, or is not delivered. Learn more about best practices for avoiding and handling issues with buyers.

What to do if you need to verify your information

If we need to verify your identity or bank account information, we will send instructions for submitting the information required to complete the verification process via email. While the steps involved in account verification are determined on a case-by-case basis, we advise sellers to consider the following guidance.

Identity verification

If you are asked to verify your identity, remember that the physical address listed in your supporting documentation must match the registered address associated with your eBay account. eBay does not accept PO box addresses or physical mail drop addresses for verification purposes.

Also ensure that the details you provide meet the following criteria:

  • The information on the documents matches what is on file with your eBay account.
    • You are not required to include your middle name.  If you do provide your middle name (by typing it before your last name, in the Last name field), it must match the documentation you provide to verify your account along with what is on file with eBay.
  • Sellers that have multiple surnames are required to be included in the account registration information. They can be entered using the format below:
    First name: Sofia
    Last name: Isabella Valeria Luciana

Bank account verification

If you are asked to verify your bank account, it is important to ensure that the information on file with eBay matches your banking information..

  • If you have a personal eBay account, your first name and last name on file with eBay should match the first and last name of the owner of the bank account identified on the bank statements. It’s important to ensure that you are defined as the checking account owner.
  • If you have a business eBay account, the business name associated with your checking account should be the same as the business name you use to register for eBay.
    • For example, if the business name on your checking account is “Joe’s Hobby Shop,” that’s the name you should use to register for managed payments.
