What is this strange pendant?

Hi everyone,

I'm not even 100% sure if this should be called a pendant. Made of three cubes depicting characters - a mermaid, strongman, Jack o'Lantern (I think) and a duck. The cubes turn so that the heads, bodies, and legs can be interchanged. 

- What does one call this kind of design (in general - eg toys)

- Do you think it is older?

I've handled a lot of jewelry pieces over time, and have never come across anything similar.

There is a set of blocks called Changeable Charlie. Vaguely similar.
