Spanish 8 reale cob coin from grandfather's collection. Is this authentic? Any thoughts? Haven't seen one quite like this online.

if it is real, it's been cut down and shaped...
i don't have much experience with cobs, but it looks suspect to me... it should be examined in person... if there's a semi-major coin show in your area, you should be able to find someone with the experience to know at the show...

Thank you! I thought the uniformity in shape might be suspect.

Excellent photos. This Heron agrees with Mr. Smedley. Try to find a specialist that is familiar with these old Spanish items.

Original actual spanish cob coins will be consistent in weight within a very tight tolerance. See if you can find a place (large jeweler or gold buyer) with an XRF machine and ask if they will check the composition of the metal for you, should be 93-96% silver.

Tourist souvenir. You find these in Florida gift shops.

I agree.
It is not genuine. The design is not correct.
A weight will help you understand. The date is in the wrong place, the castles and lions are not right and the lettering under the large "8" is incorrect.
