why are sellers so lax about shipping

It used to be that when a seller sold an item, it would ship that day if paid for immediately, or next day, depending on time of payment. I have waited for 3-6 days for items to ship, and that is unacceptable unless a seller is on vacation or ill.

eBay gives sellers 24 hours to 30 days to ship an item.  You shouldn't expect same-day shipping UNLESS the listing says that's what the seller does.

The Shipping & Payment section of the listing will often tell you the seller's usual 'handling time'.  But, more importantly ... you'll see the Estimated Delivery Date, which is the time that eBay goes by.  Buyers can file an 'item not received' dispute AFTER the EDD has passed. 

Are you checking the listing for the dates?
