I would think the more obvious reason is that the twists help stop the
pin from easily slipping out of the material. I have a couple of modern
stick pins that have the same twists. These days most come with stopper
for the sharp end to prevent injury...
That test will not tell you if a metal is solid gold or not. After all
you're only testing the surface. If an item is tested by another method
and shown to be solid gold, this test only tells you what the purity is.
The silver designs and the use of gold make me think this is Balinese.
Without a mark of any kind it could just be silverplate/copper. How did
you test it for Sterling?
