Would anyone be able to tell me more about this cast steel eagle... I can't recognize the maker's mark or inscription. As the screws attaching the base are slotted and not Philips, it must have been manufactured prior to 1940. Thank you.

You were correct! I used a boxcutter as I don't have an exacto knife and put on an oven mitt to protect my hand. With care and gentle "massaging" it readily popped off. Thank you for taking the time to help me out... It's appreciated.

Yes, I agree, it should have a lip, indent, or notch of some type to pry off the back. I've done this without any difficulty with other antique pocket watches, yet this one, even under close inspection with a magnifying glass, is flush with the case ...
