Becoming millionaires through ebay Inspiring-Stories Add comments

Two guys from the UK proved that they can become millionaires just through ebay without ever owning a physical store.

Jamie Murray never intended to start a business on the internet but today he is a successful ebay millionaire.

Jamie was working as a porter for just £60(approx $75) a week but was keen to move into something more lucrative.
He says “I’d heard a bit about eBay and the massive market you could tap into.”

It was summer 2005 when Jamie decided his used PS2 had lain idle for long enough, and he put it up for sale on eBay.

He says “I noticed most items were poorly advertised and didn’t inspire buyer confidence. “By tweaking my ad I managed to get £100 for my machine, which was definitely a good price.”

After he shipped his PS2, he noticed that he had forgot to send the memory card, So, he put the memory card for sale. Even though it was a very tiny item, He got £12. So he thought selling parts is better than selling a whole unit.

As christmas approached, Jamie realized that there may be more demand for used PS2′s . so he began buying used consoles and bought 30 consoles. in fact, he bought some from ebay itself for a cheap price.

He then Opened the consoles and divided the parts into controllers, memory cards and consoles. Then he put them
up for sale on ebay. He Says “All 30 units sold, earning me £50 profit each time, which was a total of £1,500.”

Jamie liked the idea of selling parts. He says: “Cards which could hold images, songs and video were relatively
new to the UK market, and very much in demand. They didn’t take up much space, would sell well throughout the year and were just starting to be incorporated into some Nokia phones.”

He says: “It all began in the spare bedroom at the back of my house. “The orders poured in, and after three months virtually the whole house was taken over by memory card boxes so we could meet the demand.

“Now we sell 1,500 products, which are mostly computer, camera and mobile accessories.”

His company BMC Digital now has With a turnover in excess of £3.5m. and has expanded from a back bedroom in his house to a building with four offices, a warehouse and eight employees. He says “Our story really proves the power of the internet.”

The second ebay millionaire Mark Radcliffe used £200(Approx $300) he had saved from his wages as a trainee Manager at Tesco a Grocery chain to start his eBay shop First2sell in 1999.

Mark used the garage at his parent’s semi-detached home as a stockroom, to sell items like mobile phone accessories and computer cables. Now he sells a range of 3,700 items, employs 19 staff, and operates from a 10,000 sq ft warehouse.

When asked about the secret to his success Mark said “We keep focused on popular consumables. Our biggest sellers are all items with a value of less than £15 – accessories for iPod’s and mobile phones, gadgets, and electronic toys – low value goods with a high volume and decent profit margin.

He adds “I started selling mobile phone accessories in 1999 from my own website. Then eBay came along and that gave me the opportunity to reach a much wider customer-base.

About his life and opportunities he says “I could have continued working at Tesco and become a manager, which would have been a safe job but it would not have stretched me. I couldn’t have got where I am today without the right people to help. Also being aware of the latest technology has always been important,”

He adds “The internet means that virtually anyone can succeed in business from a low start-up point. All it takes is a lot of hard work and determination.”

I thought the only way to make a million dollars on eBay was to burn your toast so it looks like Jesus or the Virgin Mary is on your toast and then sell it to some gullible fanatics.

Re: how to become ebay millionaire

There are 50 "Bajagabillion," ebay sellers &  the # grows by the gigabazillions every day. Making a million on ebay? You'd have greater chances winning the power ball lottery & we know how bad those odds are.

You have 2 ways to sell on ebay. Cheap/low (great if you got everything for FREE) or at a modest/fair price.

Unfortunately the first thing many sellers do is to go low, undercut which often forces others to do the same.

You CANNOT win on price. Anyone can sell the same thing for less. It takes no talent to be the cheapest & sadly ebay has become a global online Walmart.

So what's ths gotta' do with making a mill on ebay? That's the problem. Making just a few 1000 is tough. A million is almost unobtainable based on the direction ebayers ae going.
I'm not saying it can't be done but when you & the rest of the planet are selling the same lug nut accented casserole dish with nearly all of them priced lower than yours it makes a million much more difficult to obtain.

Re: how to become ebay millionaire

We're not eBay millionaires, by any stretch, but we have been able to make a very good supplimental income on eBay. So good in fact, that when my husband was offered an early retirement, at age 54, he was able to accept.

Our eBay income, when combined with his pension, is more than his working income. My husband had a very stressful job, and is much happier working at the eBay business.

At this time, we are looking for a larger residence to accomodate the business.

You have to be willing to learn from your mistakes, and adapt to all the changes.

Being in business for ourselves is better than "working for the man."

Nothing in this statement is accurate and makes sense, the poster just seems to be a lazy dreamer that dosen't understand how to operate the simpest of business, I don't know about a million but making a profit on ebay is not rocket science it's just and auction site.

Re: how to become ebay millionaire

I also kind of retired at 51 and started selling on ebay.  It was just for extra income and for fun to fill the monotony.  Things happened over the years where I really needed the $$ and by putting in a real effort it got me over the tough spots.  I took a year off and "worked" but quit and came back here after that year.  I even dumped ebay once to sell on another venue but found ebay was the only place to make any money.  Now I sell to make extra income and rummaging the thrift shops for things to sell is a lot of fun~~never know what you'll find.  I make enough here to afford things I otherwise wouldn't be able to afford but I know I'll NEVER become a millionaire.  Anyone who believes they will are going to have a crash back to reality pretty fast.

Re: how to become ebay millionaire

not sure if one can net a milion, but there are some sellers who gross a million.

There is a guy who posted here a few months ago,he sells camera and camera accessories, started out solo, then add wife and then add 4 staff.

He said he can no longer afford Ebay fee of $120,000,his wife has gone on job interview and his staff have all been let go.

You figure if ebay fee is 10% then he is grossing 1.2 million in sales ,and then there is Paypal fee 30 cents plus 1 %.

He did not get 20% top rated seller discount.when I read his feedback,he has many negs complaining DIRTY broken lens, wrong item, non working parts or camera etc,so I figure he must be selling returns and rejects,

back then in the late 1990s and early 2000,Ebay fee is much lower,PAYPAL fee is lower, there are less squabbles and less competition ,you pay less for your goods and you mark up these goods higher.

These days I doubt if anyone is clearing a million,if these two Brits have a building and staff,I bet they dont net a million.by selling memory cars and batteries ,parts are good sellers, but there are plenty of competition and you have to sell many to gross a million.

BTW,there is a guy who goes to China and shipped container loads of parts and accessories and whole laptop, and other electronic GADGETS,he sells 1/2 million a month and Ebay names a room after hm and Donahue took a picture with him in his office and he is wrItten up in some business magazine, the last I heard he is being investigated for patent infringement by APPLE/

Most of the people who have made a million or even sold a million on eBay have long ago left eBay for their own sites as eBay has done things to them they can not accept.

Re: how to become ebay millionaire

Competition with China and other countries that can ship their product for a fraction of others is almost impossible to make successful large scale business.  Once the TPP trade agreement is finalized.  Ebay will be put out of business.  Companies from around the world can file law suit claiming Ebay is effecting their profits and it will be left up to a group of corporate pirates that will rule in their favor without any legal recourse for Americans.  I am shocked Ebay and other online companies are not freaking out.  Amazon, Etsy, shoedazzle and others will disappear from the online presence.
