Re: DESIGNER Anri chess sets

Hi, ALL, and a good Sunday morning to all of you! Has anyone noticed how the market value / public interest seems to have gone up in the last few weeks / months on wooden (genuine) ANRI chess sets? Even a wooden ANRI Universum set in a cardboard box - with some damage to a major piece - is currently in the mid $150 range! (See ebay item #150150901537). Yes... I was an inital bidder, but I doubt if I will bid any higher than what the current bid is at... My guess is that market values - like this - go up and down according to the "season", as well as the rise and fall of folks interested in chess sets... you know... maybe some newcomers to the field of chess and other collecting. Maybe someone looking at it as a potential investment for the future... Maybe someone just likes this particular design, despite the absence of a higher "quality" wooden box that wooden ANRI sets usually come in...? I guess the reasons for interest in these sets might be as many as - if not more than - the current number of bidders. Any response from anyone on my comments? Any speculation on the seeming recent increase in market value in ANRI chess sets? (I have not, myself, gone back and taken a look at the history of realized prices at auctions, including ebay... but it is just my sense of what has been happening...) John, Vermont.

Re: DESIGNER Anri chess sets

John, I have followed ANRI sets on ebay the last couple of months. I agree good prices are payed for these sets and not only for the wooden sets. But I don't know if there is a recent increase in market value in ANRI chess sets. Robert

Cut & Pasted from Modern chess sets thread. Please feel free to dig out & revive old threads if appropriate. Otherwise we will end up with one large 'recent discussion' thread. rascasso (905) Posts: 50 Registered: 7/16/07 (26 of 26) Re STYLE: Modern chess sets Nov 19, 2007 3:11 PM Anri is too far away - many threads have gone dormant...by the way, I bought one of these ANRI chess sets described in the Database as 71008 or King Arthur - box is correct wood and all - but the pieces are Toriart resin! Very disappointing. Maybe the statement in the database that these sets were made in wood is wrong, possibly there only existed a Toriart (resin)version. Anyway, what with Lowe etc. this must be the most plagiated figurative chess set worldwide - I have a plastic version from Taiwan, and another fake wood lookalike version with rounded bases - also there is a Val Gardena (home of ANRI) company that offers an almost identical wood version....

.. and how about this one? 110193245389 Looks like the real thing - but there is this little sticker winking at You that seems to be the Toriart sticker.... so it goes... ...the longer I see them, the more I am coming around to considering ALL Anri sets - orignals , Toriart copies, plastic copy-copies - to be a pile of kitsch....

I still like the Universum set. Do you consider it kitsch, too?

.. very much - but actually it is closer to the stark fine functional beauty of fe a Max Ernst set than to the rockets or stallites the artist was thining of - even less to the painted frivolities of the ANRI chess sets. Still, it is quite common, they must have made thousands.... What do You think about this 110193245389 - plastic or wood? Seller says wood - this is an ebay drop shop, wouldn't know wood from imitation if it hit him in the face - and cdnt care less most likely....

... a very American institution - a business that accepts the sale of an article on ebay via a fixed or variable commission - that is , selling mostly for a customer in exchange for a fixed fee - or a percentage of final sale, but that is probably rarer. because the dropshop operators are not gamblers - they like ebay itself prefer a steady income! This would be an alternative for estate inheritors, instead of selling the whole caboodle to an antiquary or estate especialist. Quicker cash, even if much less - In this case Consideritsold - 16000 sales - this service seems to work fine in the US of A. I read there are 40.000 fulltime businesses depending on ebay in the USA - a goodly lot of them are dropshops, there is even one I have seen that is franchising its know how!! That set must be Toriart - resin plastic, mold made. I understand the resin with Toriart was mixed with sawdust, so there is possibly some justification to speaking of wood or partly wood. There is something unsavoury about mold copies, isn't there? As in general about replicas vz. the original..

Ah, Kristjan - there are two ANRI wood Universums in the orginal wood cassettes offered on ebay right now - plus the metal "copy" ...Your chance to get one...wonder if the metsal copy is moldcast or turned in iron...

Re: DESIGNER Anri chess sets

Item #110193245389, is Anri TORIART. Which is wood and resin mixture. Pretty, but no way as good as the true hand carved wood sets made by Anri. Incidentally, although Anri made a number of different wood carved sets as well as toriart sets, I understand that they no longer make any but the Montsalvat wood carved set. That makes the good wood carved sets scarce and collectable, which partially accounts for the price increases on Anri chess sets in ebay over the past few years. Floyd Lichess@aol.com

Re: DESIGNER Anri chess sets

If you read the description carefully, then you will notice that the word "wood" ise used about the box, not the pieces. Another 'clever' seller.

... but farther down, in reply to a question the seeler stated " wood - down know what type" . How's that for laconic? Oh well - in Portugal there is a saying: "Tudo que vem á rede é peixe" or " Whatever pops up in the net is fish".

hi kristjan if that seller is clever ... then deception is wise as mugs are fooled ... however you reap what you sow ... i think he is dumb very dumb .... thinking long term in business is alot smarter . glasgow has a rogue trader who shafted a us buyer over a rigged auction and an undisclosed re listing of a burmese set last xmas. if i get a chance i will wreck his future opportunities on the bay. such people need to be taught lessons of life .

Hello, all! Haven't scoured other threads, so sorry if already mentioned. 120219021349: "Hand crafted" Appears Toriat(?) 350022192913: "Carved". Wood pieces? Nice size, but strange marriage with mid-late 1900's Asian boxboard for ivory set. Regardless, might bid on 1 or 2. (Mad dash!?) John, Vt.

John Please tell me what these Anri sets are? Why are they special? Were they mass produced? Are they expensive? Stan
