USPS Sorting Facility: Bell Gardens, CA

Has anyone ever have a package processed through there?
Looking up information on their facility doesn't turn up ANY good news, from what I've seen.. Every review or post about that place equates it to a black hole: packages show up there, and then is never seen again.
And it's everywhere I've looked too. Plus, apparently no one is willing to help you out once a package is tracked there and then the tracking stops updating immediately. And other stories of how the town itself is just corrupt.

I do realize that sometimes you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet, so I thought I'd ask around here. Has anyone ever dealt with Bell Gardens?
I ask because I currently have a package whose tracking says it's departed the Bell Gardens facility. Granted, it's only been a day, but this is the first encounter I've had with this facility. Usually my packages get sorted through Santa Clarita, and then immediately make their way to my city, within the same day. Both Santa Clarita and Bell Gardens are only about two hours away from me.

And I thought it'd be interesting to see if there are some good, or at least decent, stories of this sorting facility, because honestly, the only tellings I've encountered were really terrible, and it makes me wonder how the facility stays open...

Around these boards, that facility is known as "The Black Hole of Bell."  Most packages do eventually show up.

Re: USPS Sorting Facility: Bell Gardens, CA

I believe that the USPS sorting facility is in Bell, not Bell Gardens. Both are tiny industrial (or post-industrial, considering the state of local manufacturing) towns bordering the City of Los Angeles, but they are different. Bell Gardens is known mainly for the Bicycle Club casino.

Bell gained a lot of notoriety after the LA Times discovered that the City Manager and the City Council had been helping themselves to taxpayer money quite freely, but I don't think this has anything to do with the USPS facility. The Bell sorting facility is centrally located to the Los Angeles area, so it handles a very high volume of traffic. So it will have a higher number of issues with individual pieces of mail in absolute terms. I would also hazard a guess that the facility is chronically working at or past the limit of its natural capacity.

USPS has a small number of sorting facilities that seem to be notorious for delays and handling errors. There's another one in New Jersey. One of the veteran sellers who hangs out on Auction Listings has said that he has a lot of problems with packages to Missouri, so there may be another black hole there.

I've had a lot of packages as a buyer route through Bell. No serious issues, although sometimes something will get stuck for a day or so.

My DC shows "Bell Gardens, but Bell CA and Bell Gardens CA are extremely close on the map. The horror stories I've read are all of Ball Gardens, though. I haven't seen anything of Bell.

But, here's hoping the DC changes within the next day or so.

Yup the city manager probably got your stuff. Just hangs out there and snatches up whatver he wants. Maybe it is the drugger gangs there. Could be the ice cream truck driver. Just keep poking on the DC burtton every 5 minutes and that will make something happen in a place called Bell.

I have the same thing going on, and am amazed at what Im hearing. For one, if its known as the black hole, you would think the government would do some sort of internal investigation to find out whats going on. (I know, like the gov. gives a crap)

Here is mine. Buyer paid on the 28th, I shipped out on the 29th, with an estimated time of delivery being anywhere from April 2nd to the 15th<< ?? Really?

Anyway, here it is May 7th, and nothing. How does something depart and then not show up anywhere??

Frustrating, I'm refunding my buyer his payment now.

Bell Gardens is considered a Huge Black Hole because of the HUGE population it serves-somewhere in the area of 1/6th the population of the United States.

Add an area prone to temperature extremes that can play havoc with a Thermal Label and yes you will get items that are lost there.

I was shipping a package from Richmond, VA to Georgia.  It went to Richmond, CA and then to Bell Gardens, CA.  Last scan was Sunday.  It's almost like the postal workers in NC (last scan on the east coast) are in on it and re rerouted the package to Bell Gardens on purpose, as it was a laptop wrapped and taped in brown paper.  Why would a package heading down the east coast 300 miles get forwarded to CA for a 6.000 miles plus roundtrip, and then a smaller city in CA?  From what I've read, it's gone.  If I'm lucky, a charger might come back.  I think there is corruption at a lot of levels in the USPS.  I'm done, using FedEx and UPS solely from now on with the $5,000 a year I spend on shipping.

Re: USPS Sorting Facility: Bell Gardens, CA

in reply to deddpool

I've mailed a lot of items that go through the Bell Gardens processing center.

To clear up some info, Bell Gardens, CA is a separately incorporated city from Bell, CA. They are next door to each other, but separate legal entities.

The items that I have go through there are my Media Mail items.

I also ship via First Class Mail and Priority Mail. Those usually go through a Los Angeles processing center in the 90052 zip code.

Santa Clarita is another processing center and sometimes I have had package go through there [usually First Class or Priority Mail] and this would be if I had packages processed through the Van Nuys PO in the San Fernando Valley or if I dropped them near me in LA and they were headed up north to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, or the Dakotas.

The PO may be streamlining all their processing so either classes of mail all go through the same processing center or packages to the same region all go there.

One external factor affects processing and that is weather conditions. These can either be local or at a destination point. For example packages seemed to delayed or rerouted in handling over the past month or so when the midwest was being hit by tornadoes. Also heavy fog in Southern CA will delay flights.

The most common problem I have run into with Bell Gardens is that they don't always fully handle packages in that they will often omit scans showing the package going through the location.

This may be due to any number of reasons [equipment failure, neglect, too much traffic, etc.].  So on some packages I just have to hold my breath until it gets to the recipients processing plant and then gets scanned. Fortunately, since I first started selling the average transit time has decreased and so I don't turn blue as often and for as long.

On occasion packages do seem to vanish into thin air. I have found this more common prior to Christmas especially the 2 weeks before. I think it's a combination of huge package volume, a big increase in temp workers, and weather conditions.

There is a link on the usps.com site at the bottom which I can't post at the moment because it appears the site is down. But it's an online form you can files for a lost package. I think it's through the Postal Inspectors link.

I've filed those a few times and within 1-2 days my package will suddenly have a tracking update, so it seems helpful.  I usually wait a what I think is an appropriate number of days based on the type of shipping I used before filing it.

Hope this info is of help to some.

Re: USPS Sorting Facility: Bell Gardens, CA

in reply to deddpool

I live in Los Angeles County, and what I've seen is that Parcel Select packages always go through Bell Gardens, while Priority Mail doesn't.  I don't ship much First Class, so I don't know for sure whether these are routed through there.

Yes, several times packages seem to go into a black hole, and I start worrying, but after a few days they show up in another state and are eventually delivered.  So I haven't lost anything through Bell Gardens yet (keeping my fingers crossed).

It has made me evaluate the cost between Parcel Select and Priority Mail on some packages, just to keep them from going to the black hole...
