My first SNAD scam

6 years with no problems, guess my time was due.

And I made every noob mistake you can make.

Sold a guy a bunch of little electrical connectors.

New in package.

My partner calls me, and said the guy just called about bad parts.

So I call the guy, and he says some are crudded up.

No problem, I will send out replacements.

But it may take a few days, we have flooding and the roads are closed.

He says no problem, no hurry.

He ask for my email, to send pics.

No need for that, it's only a few bucks.

So all communication was off ebay.

Then I said send pics, as I see no crud on my stock.

He sends picks of a crudded up item.

Then he opens a case, but he only uploads some of the pics to ebay.

Not the ones where he had used the product.

I say return for refund, no problem.

I try to put my address on the return.

but it must have defaulted to my partner.

Well it went to my partners folks home, where he lived 6 years ago.

So he calls and says he got the package.

The next day I refund.

But then I get to thinking, there is something odd here.

So I call my partner, and have him send pics.

The guy had installed the parts, then just cut the wires off.

And he shorted me one.

Sent back junk.

That was why I was in a foul mood, a few weeks back.

Soon I will start a real job, and my ebay days will end.

I could have won, but I messed up.

( he was not a fly boy )

All that trouble for 'a few bucks'.

Makes me agree with my favourite TV villain*  "You're assuming the payoff is the point."

@femmefan1946

It was crazy, total sale 25 bucks, "bad items" less than 4 bucks.

It did seem odd.

Bad buyers may eventually scare everyone off of the site and sink it

Unlikely.

Considering the number of sellers, buyers and transactions here (over 140 million transactions a day) the fraud rate is very low.

As often as not, an Item Not Received, has not been received but has been delayed in the mail.

The Boards are filled with lamentations from buyers and sellers whose transactions were kerblooey, but those are far from the norm.

We're over 20,000 transactions in (since 1998 and over seven IDs) and I'm not sure we have ever had a successful  fraud. Bad transactions yes, and mistakes on both sides , yes. But not out and out fraud.

Remember people come here to vent.

And often, when someone is screaming Fraud!!!! some investigation shows that the other party had a reasonable case for Dispute.

I purchased two items several months ago. I was in communication with the seller after a few weeks checking to make sure it was sent since they didn't use tracking. Seller assured me they sent it. Last estimated delivery date comes and goes... 30 days later on the last day of the MBG window I filed an INR claim and got a refund. Figured the seller probably thought I was a scammer taking advantage of the lack of tracking. For the record, I am not a scammer and the package truly did not arrive.

Fast forward three months... package showed up yesterday. I ordered a qty of 2 and package only had 1 item so I went to paypal and sent the seller a payment for the 1 item I received and they were very appreciative.

I wonder how often something like that happens where the buyer receives their package and does not re-pay the seller. 😞

Pretty much doubt it.  Good and GREAT buyers outnumber the stinkers about 100 to 1 here.  After years in retail, I don't think we have much more of this behavior here than most stores see over their return counters during the year.   Like our sockmonkey said, this is his first after selling here six years!

And it was my first sale to a non fly boy.

People talk about blocking zero FB buyers.

If you can't fly a plane, I don't want to sell to you.  Period

I taught a 3 year old how to fly, give me an hour, and I can teach you.

I honestly imagine people sitting at the computer with their spouse or partner saying watch this honey I'm about to get one over on this poor unsuspecting seller.
