Recalled Lane Chest REMOVE the latch!!!

Most of us know the Lane Hope Chests have been recalled but they were bought for generations and are still in many homes. We can't sell them on Ebay but if you come across one in your travels or have one in your home PLEASE remove the latch.

Another two children died in Massachusetts this week. I don't want it to happen to your kids, grandkids, neighborhood children or anyone's kids you sell to.

Would they not have had to been in the chest for a long time? They can't be air tight.

The news reports say they were in there for less than two hours. They were young and I'm not sure why their Dad didn't check on them. However some of the kids killed over the years have been older and them missing for hours might not be suspicious.

They must be somewhat airtight.

They were built to be fairly tight, to keep moths etc out of the linens. Also, two kids in there would displace most of the air and use it up quickly.

I had a beautiful Lane chest that I kept winter blankets, memoribilia, and hand crocheted items in.  One day I asked my son to get a large hand crocheted bedspread out of it because I wanted to put in on the bed in the guest room for company.  He came back and said that he could not open it.  I told him to pull on the latch and then pull the lid hard.

One inch thick solid cedar wood the lid was.

My son pulled hard enough that he broke the wood out in about a 3 to 5 inch area around the latch.  I don't guess I would have had to worry about him getting locked inside it back then even if I had known about the latch problem at the time.

Don't know about the newer ones, but older Lane (or Virginia Maid) cedar chests are airtight, and cannot be opened from the inside if they have their original lock. They offer FREE locks so that the chests can be opened from the inside.

Just looked it up ...all Lane/Virginia Maid chests made since 1987 have the new locks. You can tell when yours was made by looking inside the lid ...

The rule about the disposal of fridges, is that the locking mechanism  should be disabled and no longer functional..

Leave a fridge with a functional lock... Someone gets shut in and..... then what!

After thinking about it carbon monoxide is heaver than air so it would quickly build up in the bottom.

The lid would not have to be air tight but still not missing little ones for an hour is close to negligence at best.

Remember max, that a lane chest in use would also be pretty full of clothes and other stuff. Not much air space. Kids get into things even with the best of parents close by. Sometimes the lid will come down hard and cause unconsciousness. Really... Next you will be blaming a 3 year old for playing hide & seek.

Having said that, I got my free latch too. No need for proof of ownership or anything.

You left one out.

If your morbidly oboist don't sleep with your young children.

We had a squad call mother rolled over on her 1 year old and smothered her, big problem this was the second time in 2 years.

I'm locked in a hope chest right now. I just ordered a latch but I'm not sure it'll get here in time.

Sometimes parents leave children to  fry and die in a very hot vehicel or sometimes they freeze them to death in a very cold vehicle.

Are all the child deaths accidental ?

STAY CALM, AND TRY NOT TO BREATHE!  And do not play the oboe!  Help is on it's way!  It's good you have the internets in there with you, but do you have access to alcohol?  Must...have...fluids...survive...

My mom has a hope chest with a latch.  In 60 years, none of her four children were dumb enough to get into it and suffocate.   Some people think everyone needs to be protected against one's own stupidity.
