Stop Sniping!

I just recently started my eBay business and along with all the research I've been doing about buyer trends etc... I've noticed this idea of sniping and sniping services essentially nulling the point of an auction. Can we suggest eBay institute a system change if so where do we do that? My suggestion would be any bid placed within the last minute automatically extends the auction by 1 minute. This would allow the person willing to pay the most actually won the auction. Can you imagine going to a live auction where the auctioneer held a stop watch and whoever blurted out the loudest in the last 2 seconds won? No of course not, why should eBay be any different. eBay and sellers would make more money, The buyer who wants it the most gets it. Seems like a win win to me. What are your thoughts?

Stop Sniping!

The ONLY bid that counts is the very last one, just as the auction ends.

The ONLY bid that counts is the highest one, no matter when it's placed!

(Though I like to be as close to last and highest whenever possible!)

Ah, The good ole days when someone could be upset at having an item snipped.

That was the best part about selling here. Watching the last seconds of your auction tick away, going to your listing page and jumping around like an idiot when you see the final sale price hundreds of dollars higher than the last price you saw just before the item ended.

And the fact someone actually complained about this. 😄

Now all that is left to complain about is the oppressive business plan this site has.

cracks me up when someone arrives 12 years late to the party and proceeds immediately to complain and offer suggestions about the decorations .

Geesh, at least Bryce was timely..

chris..don't get hung up on the auction format..eBay has shifted emphasis to 'fixed price' listings because they cost eBay less to process, store and maintain.
Only people who sell old or used goods and don't know the market value use auctions and the number of buyers have dwindled that you're lucky to get one bid..regardless of when it's placed.

Sniping became a favorite past time. And we all have our own bragging rights My best snipe was 2 seconds left on the clock.

Anyway, it's been around for quite a while and Ebay won't change it.

As a seller, my best bids come in the last 5 - 10 minutes of the auction. If people want to snipe my items, why should I complain? It's a win / win situation for both the seller as well as the buyer. They get their item and I normally get a decent sale price on the item.

Love sniping, that's how I usually bid. tbil-2 seconds?! That beats me, I think my best snipe thus far is 5-6 seconds.

Yes I totally agree, I understand wanting to wait to the last moment to bid but give all of us a chance to rebid, a minute with dialup might not be enough, I've had buyers complain to me about not being able to rebid, I try and enter my top bid when I first bid on an item. Thanks, Ron

Seems like snipers are wanting to get items for as close to nothing as possible

That's what all bidders are trying to do (except maybe the really stupid ones).

As a seller why would you care if someone is sniping, the high bid is going to win, so you might end up with a few cents more its still more.

I don't use any sniping myself, as a result I do lose items quite often but thats just the way it goes sometimes. No matter what I bid on and lose there will be another just like it listed soon to bid on later. So I figure ok I lost that one now find another one, lol.

Greetings you crazy Pharties! ]:)

It should come to no surprise to the regulars that I agree completely with the Original Poster - Chris.

I have read many of your replies until I couldn't take it anymore, and it appears to this old codger that many of you tripped and fell squarely upon the tracks while trying to hop the Common Sense Train! ROFL

For sellers giving advice to sellers, and for a group of people who regularly wax fondly about the "good ol' days" when auctions were auctions, your arguments are self-defeating.

Firstly... Sniping is a GAME... It is a game which turns the concept of a winning highest bid into a winning lowest bid.
You can say "It's been proven statistically that things can be bought cheaper via the practice of sniping", and this may in fact be true, but it conceptually RUINS the auction process, and one should not wonder for long why so many sell do BIN....yet ebay still promotes and encourages auction-style listings regularly. Why? Because people are steering away from auction-style listings because of sniping.... (read: your cheapskate attempts to steal my items!).

For a seller to promote sniping and then yearn for the good ol' days is like taking a child into a porn shop every week and then wondering where the child's morals went to.

JUST BECAUSE 3 people get into a sniping battle at the end of a sale, (thus your auction ends on a higher note than 5 minutes prior to the sniping frenzy), DOES NOT support the notion sniping is beneficial to anyone beyond the winning sniper. Not only that... it specifically benefits snipers with the fastest internet connection.
The entire act of "waiting until the last minute" is an act that leads to many people being left out of the bidding process, simply because they "forgot" to log in during the last few seconds of a 5, 7 , 10, or 30 DAY sale. This fact, in fact, makes buyers look stupid also, particularly when they contact the seller to relist because they "forgot"...or fell asleep, or had company arrive, or got in a fight with the wife, or had to go to the bathroom. Hell..they only forgot for 2 minutes... but since they jumped onto the commonly accepted notion of "waiting until the last minute" they jeopardize positive results for everyone including themselves.

If you, the seller, were not at the mercy of this practice of cheapskates, (whether that title includes you or not) you would make more money, perhaps save money on relisting--- and perhaps you could afford to spend a little more on an auction....then perhaps you could enjoy the "good ol' days" again.

All ebay would need to do to resolve this would be to set the system up so a buyer had to insert a "captcha" number in order to place a bid..effectively destroying all high-speed sniping services and last-second bids. You could still see a bidding rush during the last few minutes, such would be reasonable and within expectations.

In short, the practice of sniping remains to be a corruption of the concept of auctioning for anyone who is accustomed to real-life auctions, and has basically turned it over to those who desire to game the system. When you snipe, you game the system. I honestly believe that everyone would be more successful--- buyers and sellers and ebay... if the extreme end of it were removed.

I remain disturbed to see so many sellers supporting the conceptual hacking of their own limbs. It's bothersome and dizzying to say the least.

As you were.... -gary

I believe part of the sniping problem and consequently deterioration of prices can be attributed to folks who think they can buy and resell on ebay on a consistent basis. This concept of buying and re- selling on ebay is a foolish business practice and needs to stop.

The ramifications of this business model are that regular bidders disappear, prices are driven down and DSR stars get dinged (mostly shipping and handling). The winning bidder many times is frustrated that they probably will not be able to resell the item at a profit on ebay so they turn around and ding S&H star.

One poster on another thread commented that "you CAN buy on ebay and resell on ebay IF you know what you are doing." I think "know what you are doing" translates into "knowing how to snipe". Yeah there might be the odd item where the seller has no clue as to the items true value or just doesn't care but I don't think there are that many clueless sellers on ebay.

It's one thing to buy items on craigslist or a garage/yard/estate sale and then resell on ebay. But think of it this way, If you owned a retail hardware store would you try to stock your shelves by walking into another local hardware store to haggle the owner so you could by his wares cheaper so you could resell them in your store? Business doesn't work that way. It's a dumb business model and on ebay, it is poopin where you eat.

Auctions are setup to create interest and excitement with the hope that both the buyer AND seller win. It's not a one way street. So as a seller, I agree, stop the sniping, stop trying to buy on ebay and resell on ebay. Get off your butt and source product the hard way. It's way more satisfying for everyone.

Tell you what: let's make eBay just like a real-life auction. Everybody has to go to the seller's house to look at the item, and then it's auctioned off in about two minutes. That should work just great.

Sniping is no more a strategy than throwing a spitball is a strategy. It's an attempt to rig the outcome of something that has defined rules.

Sniping deters a percentage of bidders who really would like to have the item and who are even willing to pay a little more to win it. But after several episodes of having the rug pulled out by perceived trickery or some special little app, those "real" bidders throw their hands up and go elsewhere.

I truly believe that the "professional snipers" do not really want the item for themselves. They just want to frustrate the other bidders and win it with the hope of reselling the item at a profit. It's a bully tactic and over the long term results in overall lower bid activity.

More nonsense. The sniper bid the most he's willing to pay, but still wins the item for a low enough price that they can resell for a profit?

Come back when you have an argument that makes at least a little sense.
