You refund your buyer when you have received the item back, or if you are satisfied with any pictures of the damage they have sent you can refund them immediately.
If your buyer is amenable after the refund, you can ask them if they will agree to a cancellation so you can get a refund of your Final Value Fees from eBay, then send them a cancellation request.
Finally, you kick yourself in the pants for not buying insurance, and remember to buy it next time.
