Reading through some of these threads, it has occurred to me that setting a restocking fee in my return policy may be a good idea.
The reason being - that I've read that ebay keeps their 10% even when an item is returned.
It's just my husband and I selling stuff from our home, so I had never thought a restocking fee was necessary, but the idea of paying ebay 10% on a returned item - especially on the more expensive items - well, we just can't afford that.
I was wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom, or experience with returns and/or restocking fees. I haven't had a return yet (but have heard some horror stories).

Charging a restocking fee is a very bad idea, you then force your unhappy buyer to open a case against you for their full refund with original shipping..and no charge for restocking fees. And every case you lose is a black mark on your Ebay record, too many of those and you will be suspended from selling. You heard wrong that you cannot get your final value fee credited to your account for a refund.

I personally will not bid on any item that has a restocking fee.
Yes, I understand that sellers use it to keep buyers from using eBay as an approval service.
I've only ever sent one item back for a refund and that was because it was damaged in shipping.
I'm very careful about what I'm bidding on and who the seller is.
But if I feel a SNAD is in order I don't expect to be charged for returning it.
As it is I'll probably have to pay to return the item.

I just took a quick look and found nothing in eBay's rules/policies about a restocking fee.
Looks like one aspect of selling they haven't tried to regulate.

I found: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/credits.html
It sounds like ebay *will* credit the final value fee on returns *providing* the buyer hasn't opened a case.
I guess there's always going to be risk, right?
And the more money that's spent, the more risk involved.
