How do I tell if an item is real 999% silver

trying to find out if a dish is just silver plated or real silver

If it's not stamped as such I don't know how to tell from a picture.

A dish is unlikely to be 99.99% silver.

It could be Sterling silver, which is 92.5% real silver.

Sterling silver is always marked. Various marks are used including 925.

You can google these marks.


Silverplate is sometimes marked- again with various marks, or it can be unmarked.
