return charges for postage.

when I purchased an item I added a message that it must reach me by a certain date (ties for a wedding)the timescale was in fact 2 days prior to this day, then i find that they were not dispatched until 4 days after order so i didnt get them in time, now i want a refund which they have agreed but they will not pay the return postage, why should i be out of pocket through thier incompetance?
