Could the cameo pin be bakelite and other bog oak ?

The cameo does not test bakelite but I think I heard black sometimes does not..is that right?  The other pin looks older and do you think part is bog oak and part vulcanite?

The black one could be vulcanite. I know a lot of very old black buttons were made of vulcanite.

Thanks for the reply!  I thought about that but didn't think the clasp looked old enough.

Here are some photos of vulcanite jewelry. Many cameos were made of it. http://tinyurl.com/qye5t4b But your cameo could be a composite material. Hard to say.

There are any number of things this piece could be made from.  Bakelite, vulcanite, coal, ebony, onyx, hard plastic, and bog oak, it is really hard to tell from a picture.

Thanks for all the replies!  Think I will just list as early plastic or either put in a lot.

Take a look at the scratch test at the bottom of this link, it may help Smiley Happy

Great site and good information BUT please, PLEASE - DO NOT DO A HOT NEEDLE TEST on any piece of jewelry!  Not only can it damage pieces depending on what an item is made of, but can be dangerous.

Can you show close ups of the smaller pin? I don't know if I can help with it but it looks very interesting!
