New Perm

Just got a perm and yes, it's a big change. Does anyone knows how long it takes to relax a bit?

New Perm

I have a spiral perm ( looks like I just stuck my finger in a light socket:-)). Since I have been getting perms for 20 + years, every stylist has told me to wait 2 or 3 days, even today with the new chemicals that are less harsh.:-x

New Perm

Everytime I think of a spiral perm (I used to have them when my hair was longer) I think of the long haired Peter Frampton (but he may be before your time). I really like mine, but now my hair falls between my shoulder and my chin, and the DH gives me body waves (he just won't admir to it). my twin sister had her hair cut like Princess Di (the short version like on the cover of the Andrew Morton book) and I am thinking of getting it cut that way. at least I have some idea of how it will look (my twin looked great with it). I don't know about you, but longer hair is tough to cram under a riding helmet, etc.

I thought most perms went out in the 80's. I just cringe when I think of those yellow and pink rod perms my mom had me get at the beauty schools. Mom still gets perms but thats a mom thing I guess ...hee hee At least mom knows better and she curls her hair with a wider rod curling iron as not to keep those orphan Annie curls. I could see getting one to add some "body" but when I see those tight rod perms that people just leave that way, I think back to the BIG 80's......

Oh goodness I have not had a perm in more years than I can remember! My only one was back in high school and my hair was quite long. So the first week or two it was a bit too curly but because my hair is thick, it sort of softened to more wavy. Anyway with all the choices of irons, curlers etc these days, I kind of perfer not to make anything permanent and just experiment when I have time ( and energy! ) 🙂

Isn't it ironic that all the girls in HS that had that gorgeous curly hair used to IRON it to straighten it.....and we pay big bucks to get the look they tried hard to change.

Maybe it is an age thing. Seems like lots of elderly ladies in the salons get those pincurl sets. Almost not enough hair to get a perm, but they manage to.

I got a perm yesterday and now my hair seems greasy and straight. The stylist put a conditioner in my hair for 10 minutes after the perm. Will my hair curl after I wash it for the first time?

Help

I want curly hair but I am too scared to take the plunge. I have very fine hair but quite a lot of it and it is dead strait. Not dry or greasy but I do fiddle with it a lot and the roots get greasy where I am forever running my hands through it. I would like to know if you "think" I would be ok to have a perm, also I want a spiral type perm, how do you get this effect rather than the normal "old lady" type of perm, please dont take offence anyone, I am not very technical, but I am guessing your already worked that out 😄

Hopefully needs or one of the other hair specialists will be along to help you all soon!!

I've never heard of putting a conditioner on for 10 minutes after a perm. I've been getting perms for years, and never has anyone done this to me. Hopefully by the time you have read this perm you will have wahsed your hair and everything will be fine. If you perm is NOT taking, go back to the salon and see what they can do. Don't just accept the fact that it does not have the curl you wanted.

I had spiral perms for years. Why not go into a salon for a consultation? There are tons of various perms on the market-should be one for your hair type. I too have fine, straight hair, and I never had a problem with a perm taking.

LOL @ dull!! Yes, Peter Frampton was popular when I was in high school, in fact girls use to tell me that my boyfriend at the time looked like him ( long blonde wavy hair, not curls), but I never saw the connection.?:|

I really don't care what's "in style", because I can think for myself. I hated the whole 1980's fashion disaster, and if I could find the clothing I would dress as if it were 1910 everyday..........

One time a perm flopped on me the next day after getting it, so I went back to the shop and showed the stylist and the owner, and they were very nice about it and gave me my money back. I would rather have had a nice perm, but they were fair, so I was happy:-D

First of all, I find all of the grammar digs here very amusing - I have an MA in English, but even I accept that electronic communication cannot be held to the same standards as print media.

Now, the real reason I viewed this posting is because I was given a perm yesterday that did not seem to "take", and I wasn't sure how to proceed. The stylist also gave me a vague, "Don't wash it for a couple days," so I was looking for an official ruling. However, the postings on this site have left me with more questions than answers, so I suppose I will have to look elsewhere.

I will leave my own advice for the other hesitators, though: If in doubt, stick with hot rollers. Allow the rollers to cool completely before you remove them, and your curls should last longer.

The salon, by the way, did offer to re-perm my hair in a couple of weeks using tighter rollers. We'll see if that works...

Update: I shampooed my hair this morning, roughly 36 hours after my perm was complete. I used a light spray gel, and scrunch-dried my hair with a volumizing diffuser attached to my blow dryer; my curls have stayed intact for over 6 hours now. This is a huge improvement over yesterday, when my hair looked like greasy, stringy straw. I rinsed my hair in the shower and applied this leave-in conditioner that my stylist recommended at least three times in between my perm and my shampoo. So, yes, you can get your hair wet in the first 24 hours and it won't ruin the perm, but I would advise against using conditioner. I think it was weighing my hair down, and that's what made it look like the perm didn't take.
