Europa C&O #328 Mergentheim Teutonic Orden 1 Kreuzer 1776 [Slightly Obscure].

10 Julio 2017 - Greetings to all coin collectors every-where!  In the ongoing effort to keep this coin chatting place alive, Heron reports acquisition of Europa C&O item number 328.   From a somewhat slightly obscure place.  And perhaps a place that some coin collectors never knew existed!  Quizas?

The Coin:  Teutonic Order at Mergentheim Deutschland - 1 Kreuzer - Billon -

                      Full date 1776 - 15mm dia.

Obverse:  Crowned Teutonic Knights Coat of Arms between palm branches.

Reverse:              1.Kr.

                         NACH DEM

                          CONVENT

                                FUS.

                          W.1776.E.

                                 .W.

Notes:   W. E. are engraver's initials.

                .W. is Wertheim Mint Mark.

                [Mint Mark informacion from Coins.HA-Com].

A Brief History:

1219 - Mergentheim became property of Teutonic Orden.

1340 - Mergentheim received City Charter.

1525 - Mergentheim became residence of Teutonic Orden Grand Master.

Note:  Recently Heron reported acquisition of a coin from the original Duchy of

Prussia.  [East Prussia - not to be confussled with Royal Prussia aka West

                                 Prussia]

Some might recall that Albrecht, 1st Duke of Prussia [East] requested that

the Teutonic Knights 'stand down'.   That was in 1525 when Albrecht created

the Duchy of Prussia.   Well, the Knights complied and removed theyselves

to Mergentheim.   As youse can see, a lot of this history is interwoven.

1809 - The Teutonic Knights Orden was terminated by Napoleon I.

Some Notes:

The term "Nach Dem Convent Fus" is an abbreviated form of notification.  In English this would be "Made to Conventions Standards".   Meaning that the coin

conforms to the then current 'conventions standards'.

Ruler in 1776 was Teutonic Orden Grand Master Karl Alexander von Lotharingen

            und Bar.  1761 to 1780.

Known population counts for Mergentheim ...1660 was 1,064.

                                                                                       ...1855 was 2,917.

Heron has extrapolated a population amount of 1,990 for year 1776.

This might work until a solid source of population info can be found for 1776.

So, as youse can see,  Mergentheim was a rather small place in 1776.  However, even at 1,990 population [Estimated] it was still larger than Falckenstein Austria!

Falckenstein is still the leader of 'Most Obscure' place...!

However, Mergentheim shirly must be in the top 5 of most Obscure... Quizas?

**As Heron searches for additional Central & Oest European coins, a lot of fun is

beginning.   Hours of research to find issues of coins by small entities in obscure corners of the Holy Roman Empire and various places in Poland and the East.

However, this adds to the ongoing FUN of this marvelous hobby of coin collecting.

A super hobby for a lifetime.  Opinion.  Regardos**
