Europa C&O #325 - Krakow Poland 6 Groschen 1662 Silver

pleased to report item number 325 for the small accumulation of Europa Central & Oest coins.  

 

The Coin: Krakow Poland 6 Groschen Silver - full date 1662 - 24mm dia. Round.

 

Obverse:  At center a Portrait of John II Casimir Vasa.

                     Legend: 'IOAN CAS DG REX P0L.SVE.M.DLR'

Reverse:  At center three shield type Coats of Arms for Poland, Lithuania, & Vasa.

                    Legend: 'GROS.ARGSEX.REG.POL. 1662'.

 

A Condensed History of Krakow:

4th Century - earliest known settlement on this spot.

966 - First written record.

1000 - Catholic Diocese established.

1038 - Krakow becomes 'Polish seat of government'.

1241 - Town sacked by Tatars.

1257 - Town granted city 'rights' as a type of Municipalidado.

1306 - Town taken by Wladyslaw Lokietek.

1364 - Krakow Academy established.

1566 - Approximate date - Polish Capitol relocated to Warsaw.

1655 - Siege of Krakow by Swedish troops.

1768 - Krakow occupied by Russian troops.

1794 - Prussians take city.

1807 - Krakow becomes part of Napoleon's Duchy of Warsaw.

1815 - After defeat of Nap I the Republic of Krakow is established by the

            Congress of Vienna.

Comentario:  Heron was pleased to find this coin on eBay.  Three day delivery from the far east.  [Yes, from Hackensack].   After studying approximately 50 examples on the 'net', Heron believes this coin to be not counterfeit.

Another line drawn through a 'wanted item'.   A great deal of pleasure!

Yes, heading eastward has really been a coin searching pleasure plus helping reach numbers not expected.   Coin collecting is a great hobby, por seguro!
