Europa C&O #319 Imperial City Ravensburg Vierer Silver Coin [1622]

2 Mayo 2017 - Greetings to all coin & paper money collectors every-where!  Heron

reports the acquisition of a Ravensburg coin in hopes that this report will help the

coin chatting board to continue onward.  At least for another six months, mas o menos.

The Coin: Ravensburg - Vierer aka 4 Pfennig - Silver - 12.5mm dia.  No date,

however, this coin is listed in KM catalog for one year of issue.  That year

is 1622.  Another 1622 coin issue!   A wartime issue.  The 30 Years War.

This neat small coin is an Einseitiger, or one sided coin.

Einseit:  A depiction of the town Coat of Arms which is two towers.  Above the

                 towers is the number 4.

This silver coin is very dark in color.  Heron suspects that it could have been underground for a few years or a coupla centuries!

Ravensburg is not to be confussed with Ravensberg.  Ravensberg was Heron's

number 318.  Ravensburg is number 319.

A tad bit of history:

1088 - First mention of Ravensburg, home of the Welf family.

1191 - Ravensburg inherited by Haushohenstaufen - Freddy Barbarossa.

1268 - The Holy Roman Emperor became owner of Ravensburg.

1276 - Ravensburg appointed Free Imperial City of the H.R.E.

1803 - Ownership to Bavaria after Ravensburg secularized & mediatized.

1810 - Ownership to Wurttleberg by a 'swap' of territory.

Regarding dating of this coin:  This particular coin has no date.  However, the KM catalog lists this coin with similar coins that have date of 1622.   The KM catalog also only lists coins issued 1622.   The KM catalog shows this coin as [1622] issue.

This coin was on Heron's 'want list'.  It is always fun to drawr that line through it.

Notable Ravensburgers:

Henry the Lion - born 1130.

Ladislaus Sunthaym - Historian & Geographer.

Hans Buchner - 1483 to 1538 - Composer.

Because Ravensburg had NO military significance during WWII, there were no bums dropped upon this town.

Ravensburg is located just a few miles north of the Swiss border.

A few miles south of Weingarten.

A few miles west of Unterankenreute.

A few miles north of Oberschach.

A few miles east of Deggenhausertal.

** This was one a those unexpected situations of coin collecting.  Heron had acquired Ravensburg Vierer in mid March.  Then in late March Heron acquired the nice Ravensberg coin.   Reporting these one after the other seemed like a good thing to Heron.  Anyhow, this is #319.  This is a super fun hobby!   And we just never know what coins will be 'found' whilst the 'hunt' continues.**
