A Change of Pace! Prince Edward Island 1/2 Penny Token 1857.

Greetings on Cinco de Mayo!  Heron continues reporting coin & token acquisitions in order to assist in keeping this Coin chatting board alive.  Or at least somewhat alive!

A change of pace indeed.   Some of youse collectors that have been on the Coin Chat Board since January 1999 probably know that Heron enjoys collecting Copper coins & tokens.   Well, this item fits the collection nicely.

The Token:  Prince Edward Island 1/2 Penny token dated 1857.   This token is also known as the 'George Davies PEI 1/2 Penny token'.

This token is Copper and is 26mm in diameter.

It is referred to as a "Pre-Confederation Commercial Token".   Heron found this essplanacion in one of the online info places.

On side 1:  A large 1857 at center.   Surrounded by "PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND".

On side 2:     SELF

                GOVERNMENT

                         FREE

                       TRADE.

Per reference sources, this token was actually issued by 3 'businessmen':

George Davies, Simeon Davies, and Henry Haszard.  [No typo - repeat Haszard].

Most collectors of British Empire coins are familiar with the Prince Edward Island 1 Cent coin issued in 1871.   Heron acquired a Prince Edward Island 1 Cent 1871 in year 1948.  From LIttleton Co.   Approximately 25Cents U.S. plus 10Cents postage.

Yes, mail order coin collecting fun back then!

In 1977 Heron was happy to have the opportunity to hitch a ride on the big ferry

boat from New Brunswick to PEI.   No problem with the Shiverlay Suburban on that ferry boat.   Stayed overnight.  Had a great lobster dinner at the waterfront restaurante.   Next day rode the ferry boat to New Scootland [Nova Scotia].

A fun trip, por seguro.   However, Heron could not find a coin shop on PEI.

Yes, this recent addition received from western Europe is a fun addition.  It was enroute for 18 days.  Most likely via slow freighter outta Lisbon.  Patience indeed!

And so another very small chapter in the life of a world coin aficionado.  A fun hobby for a lifetime.

Hola, Heron!  Good to see you around here...

I have a small collection of Canadian copper tokens, including a couple from PEI, including the "Speed The Plough" token and a couple of "Ships, Colonies, & Commerce" tokens.

The Floggings Will Continue Until Morale Improves.

11 May 2017 - Hola Ted200!  It is good to 'see' you here.   Thank you for the comment re PEI tokens.   Your list is about double or triple Heron's PEI tokens.  Actually token is more correcto.   Perhaps after Heron is mostly finito with the Central & Eastern Euro coin accumulation he will resume the Copper Token search.   In addition, your comment also reminds Heron that the 'info sources' were not added in the original post.  So here they are now:

Info Sources:    Coins & Canada - com.

                               Coinquest Token Info.

                               Numista Token info.

Searching for tokens could be an interesting 'hobby' segmento.
