A Change of Pace: Penang Island 1/2 Cent 1810 Copper.

31 Julio 2017 - A Change of Pace indeed!   In the ongoing attempt to help keep this coin chatting place alive, and perhaps 'well',  Heron is pleased to report the acquisition of a Penang Island East India Company 1/2 Cent 1810, Copper.  This coin is 24mm in diameter.    This coin has a lot going for it:  A Copper coin from the era of Napoleonic war,  an Island issue,  has a nice Coat of Arms onnit,  and a 'new' place of issue for Heron's Gran Britannia empire accumulation.

Penang Island is off the west coast of Malaya.

1791 - The Sultan of Kedah ceded this island to the Brits.   Administered by the

East India Company.  First Brit territory in Malaya area.

Obverse:  Coat of Arms of the East India Company.

                     Date 1810 at six oclock.

Legend "Ausficio Regiset Senatus" on COA 'ribbon'.

Legend in English "Under the Auspices of the Sovereign and Senate

                     [of England]".

Reverse:  At center in Malay Arabic 'Pulau Penang'.

                    Surrounded by wreath of flowers.

This coin/token was minted at the Royal Mint in London, of Gran Britannia.

This coin/token was not on Heron's want list.   It was found in local dealer's inventory along with the Poland Olkusz coin.  The Olkusz coin also was not on Heron's 'want list'.   Mainly because Heron had never heard of Olkusz.

We learn new things every day whilst accumulating coins from far away and sometimes obscure places.

Coin collecting has been a great hobby... for a lifetime and now over 71 years of collecting!   Super fun indeed!    Regardos.

Yes, a nice collectible coin! The half pice, pice and 2 pice would make a nice trio. All have the same design with the primary difference being the size, but the 1825 & 1828 issues of all three denominations were minted in Madras. Thanks for sharing.

15 Agosto 2017 - Hola Too-toot, your post of 13 Agosto 1237 hrs:  Yes, elHeron really enjoys acquiring and studying the copper [and sometimes silver] tokens of Gran Britannia.   Especially the tokens issued from about 1780 to 1830.   But not restricted to those years.   A great segmento of the coin hobby.   Heron has enjoyed this segmento since April 1946.   In 2017 it is mucho fun to find a 'new' item for this accumulation.   Thanks for your comentario.   Regardos.
