Collectible Childrens Books on eBay

Anyway, here is an example currently for sale for $85. It is about half way down the page with pictures.

Ten little tin soldiers. Akron, OH: Saalfield Pub. Co., [1910]. 8vo. [6] pp.; illus.
$85.00

Uncommon cloth book: A sweet little rhyming tale about Tommy's toy soldiers, charged with defending the room while he sleeps but not quite sure how to handle maternal intrusion. This brightly colored story, printed on double-fold tall muslin pages, comes from the “Saalfield's Muslin Books” series (Saalfield no. 600G).

WorldCat locates only four institutional holdings.

• Publisher's color-printed cloth; creased across middle, sewing starting from extremities. Upper and lower edges slightly frayed. A few small smudges, mostly confined to lower portion of front cover and one other page. An unusual survivor in pleasing condition. (30310)

Hope this helps

One of the 10 lettered copies of the French limited edition Le Petit Prince recently sold for a modest $3,500 on eBay. I've never seen one of the lettered copies, a subset of the 260 signed and numbered French language versions. A numbered edition in lesser condition is currently offered for $19,200.

The seller actually diminished the book in his description, with  "These prices are MUCH higher than mine. Though quite frankly, I think most of them are just try to rip people off." Kind of ironic since at a reputable auction house or by a top children's bookseller, this book could easily fetch $25,000.

Item 170819123793 sold for $3,500 on Apr. 4, 2012

"Le Petit Prince " Limited 1st Edition SIGNED!!! " The Little Prince "1943 Excellent cond! Original French version. No Reserve!

"This is a SUPERB copy of the Antoine de Saint Exupery classic "Le Petit Prince". Shows very little wear, especially for being almost 70 years old! Not much wear or rounding. Has been on a shelf most of its life and has accumulated some dirt on the spine of the dust jacket that could be cleaned by a professional (I'm not about to risk it myself!). Looks like it had a sticker on the dust jacket at some point because there is a clean spot towards the bottom. There were only 260 of these signed first run books made. 250 were available to the public, 10 were kept private. I believe this to be the last of the private stock of books as it is labeled "J" (tenth letter in alphabet, tenth book) and it does have the corresponding "J" on the dust jacket spine as all of these limited signed editions have the same number written on the dust jacket as they do at the inscription. I acquired this book about three years ago, planning on handing it down, but tough economic times make for tough calls and something had to go. I know this book is going to make a wonderful addition to someone's collection.

Here are some others for sale [link].These prices are MUCH higher than mine. Though quite frankly, I think most of them are just try to rip people off. The only other French version that is signed is priced at $19,200! Cheapest signed edition is $2990 on a 6th printing, and is a library copy! I think my buy it now price is a FAIR price. I don't mean to get more than what is is worth and won't accept less either. I would prefer this item to go to someone that will keep it and not someone looking to make a profit. A quick search of "Saint Exupery, limited, signed" on google gives a lot of hits for these selling for much more. I'm not restricting it from resellers (how could I anyway) but if you're out to make a buck please pass on it if someone that doesn't have 500 book sales a month is bidding."

Hmmmm, I must be going daft, thought I posted this Pat The Bunny auction before on this thread. Oh well. Sold for $384; last one I saw was offered for $12,000 by Bauman's, although it was in better condition. Still, looks like another missed opportunity.

"PAT THE BUNNY

by DOROTHY KUNHARDT

1940 - TRUE FIRST EDITION

BOOK IN BOX

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This auction is for a true first edition of Pat The Bunny

As noted in several books the first edition of the book came with a squeek ball which was later replaced by a box of buttons. This book has the ball.

Photo # 2 + 3 show the front and back of both the box (2) + book (3)

The box does have a fold in the flip top box and one tab is hanging on by a thread (still attached but could fall off)

Each page of the book is shown in the photos.

On the page with Judy's book I have put two photos in one showing the page and then the pages in that book.

On the peek a boo page the cloth piece is missing

The bunny soft fabric is present but does have some age yellowing as shown"

I've never heard of this 1916 softcover Johnny Gruelle compilation.

Item 290700608108 sold for $375 on Apr. 26, 2012

"Extremely Scarce: The Travels of Timmy Toodles by Johnny Gruelle 1916.

- The Travels of Timmy Toodles is a compilation of Johnny Gruelle’s six illustrated “Timmy Toodles” stories originally published in John Martin’s Book magazine in 1914.

- This is a softcover booklet (10 ½” by 8”) with 32 unnumbered pages printed on heavy newsprint in a format similar to John Martin’s Book monthly magazine. It contains black and white drawings by Johnny Gruelle (creator of Raggedy Ann and Andy), interspersed with rhyming text, reprinted from John Martin’s book. The title page, facing page, and three full-page illustrations are highlighted in orange.

- The book’s dedication is to Marcella and Worth, Johnny’s first two children.

- This is an extremely scarce volume. Very few copies are in private collections. Most Gruelle (collector) reference books refer to a copy owned by Brown University.

- Condition: This copy is in wonderful condition, considering its age, and the fact that its covers are made from a heavy newsprint stock that is susceptible to becoming brittle over time. This copy is tight, with no loose cover or pages. The front cover has light age soiling and a very small amount of chipping along the edges. The back cover has a missing corner in the upper left (see pictures). There is some pulling away from the staples on the front cover and first two pages when you open the book, but they are not loose. "

This ratty old copy of McElligot's Pool, without DJ, sold for $1580 in a very lively auction. While Seuss signatures are a dime a dozon on eBay, the provenance and drawing in this book are to die for.

Item 320861126409 sold for $1580 on March 11, 2012

RARE First Edition INSCRIBED with DRAWING by DR. SEUSS - McElligot's Pool - 1947

"Description: Rare INSCRIBED First (1st) Edition of Dr Seuss' "McElligot's Pool" with open mouth fish on cover. Published in 1947 by Random House, it is beautifully illustrated and features alternating black and white illustrated pages with colored ones. It tells the story of a young boy patiently fishing in McElligot's pool, day dreaming of all the potential fish he hopes to catch.

Marks/Hallmarks/Signatures: Cover page features an original drawing in blue ink of an "Onak" fish along with an inscription by Dr Seuss which reads, "An Onak fish for the Onaks from Dr. Seuss." At the top of the same page it is inscribed in a different handwriting, "Longstreths 1948 Xmas." Back cover also reads "To Patty Onak" in pencil. The Longstreths are a prominent La Jolla, California family with ties to Dr. Seuss. See photographs.

Size: 8" x 11 1/4"

Date: 1947.

Condition: Book shows significant wear as documented in the photographs. The front cover has a bend and there appears to be glue on the bottom edge of the cover. The spine is missing although the binding is intact. None of the pages are ripped but it was definitely well-loved and read."

A nice price for this beautiful German mechanical book.

Item 270982881083 sold for $471 on May 26, 2012

Victorian German Mechanical Book ~ Lebendes Uffen Theater ~ Monkeys

"This auction is for a wonderful Victorian Children's book. This book is all in German and title reads " Lebendes Uffentheater ". This book is a mechanical book. Each page has a cardboard tab at edge - when moved back and forth or in and out page illustrations move as well. For example the first page shows a family of monkeys seated around a table . When you move the cardboard tab hand moves on one monkey, eyes on another, two others are fighing over a dish - pulling back and forth and one is licking his plate. Very detailed and very clever.

There are 8 pages of mechanicals. Pages opposite have verse. Condition is good on this book. Covers have light wear and soil. Binding is red cloth. Mechanicals on pages all have wear. # 1 ( monkey is missing hand ) # 2 shows Monkeys on horse back - this has tape on bottom and side edge. When cardboard tab is moved in and out horses gallop. # 3 shows a ringmaster with a goat - this has tape at top edge corner, # 4 shows two dancing poodles and a monkey band. There is a side page edge tear . # 5 shows a bear , lamb and pig on a seesaw. This page also has taping along edge. # 6 shows a monkey Soldier on horseback with a sword. There is also something under a tent but this mechanical is not working well and this piece does not show itself. There is some tape lower corner. # 7 shows a woman with a seated elephant. When tab is pulled she pours wine and the elephant drinks. This page has a small piece of lower corner missing. Last page shows a woman monkey seated in a tent being carried by two other monkeys. When tab is pulled monkey tips hat and woman monkey lifts fan. This page has tape on the tent and mechanical needs some tweeking. All of the pages have some separation at outer edges. These pages had some separation for the tabs to move but over time some have separated more. A very interesting and unusual book !! Book measures 10 1/0 x 14."

Anne of Green Gables - L. M. Montgomery RARE FIRST EDITION Very Good Condition!

"Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery    FIRST AMERICAN EDITION

Published by L.C. Page, April 1908

This auction is for the first American edition of L.M. Montgomery's first book, Anne of Green Gables!

It was published by L.C. Page in April of 1908.   On the back of the title page it clearly states this is the April 1908 edition, with no additional printings indicated.

It is in Very Good condition.

Included are the frontispiece and seven additional illustrations by M.A. and W.A.J. Claus.

It measures approximately 5 1/2 by 7 3/4 inches.   429 pages, plus an 8-page list of books available from L.C. Page.

Included in this listing of books is Anne of Green Gables.

This early advertisment reads: By L.M. Montgomery, Cloth decorative, illustrated $1.50 Every one, young or old, who reads the story of "Anne of Green Gables," will fall in love with her, and tell their friends of her irresistible charm. In her creation of the young heroine of this delightful tale Miss Montgomery will receive praise for her fine sympathy with and delicate appreciation of sensitive and imaginative girlhood. The story would take rank for the character of Anne alone; but in the delineation of the characters of the old farmer, and his crabbed, dried-up spinster sister who adopt her, the author has shown an insight and descriptive power which add much to the fascination of the book.

This is an immensely scarce book, rarely seen in such nice condition!

Book Condition:
This book is in Very Good condition!   It is bound in pretty, light pale green cloth.   The gold gilt lettering of the title and author on the spine is very bright!   The gold lettering on the cover shows light wear.

The book's cover illustration, by George Gibbs, has a few tiny scuffs.

The top and bottom corners of the spine are lightly worn, due to shelf wear.   The spine's bottom edge is creased, as shown.

The corners are lightly bumped.

The boards are bright and clean - no stains, fading, bumps or scratches!

The binding is sound, and all pages and illustrations are present.   This is a very clean copy!   The text is bright and clearly legible.

The pages are all clean and supple, with no writing.   The illustration plates are quite sharp and attractive.   There are a few small smudges on the back of one illustration, as shown in the photos.   There is a very small, dark stain along the bottom edge of pages 33 - 34, as shown in photographs.

There is a tiny amount of paper loss to the bottom edge of the front end paper.   Pages 1, 17-18 and 113-114 also have this uneven bottom edge, possibly where uncut pages were opened.

A handful of pages have lightly creased corners.   A few pages have slightly ragged exterior edges, not affecting the text.

When bound, some pages were unevenly trimmed, leaving roughly a 1/4 inch to an 1/8 inch of variance along the bottom edges.   This flaw does not affect the text in any way.   Minor foxing is present on some pages and plates, not affecting the text, although there are light stains to some images, as shown."
