The seller went to great lengths to describe the points of issue, as one should on a book of this stature.

1900 L Frank Baum Wonderful Wizard of Oz First Edition First State B Binding

"L. Frank Baum. W. W. Denslow. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Geo. M. Hill Co. Chicago. New York. Original illustrated cloth-covered boards. 8 3/4 by 7 inches. (261) pages. First edition, first state, second binding. Some soiling, fading and wear to covers. Some abrasion to bottom edge of covers near the spine. The top edge of the spine has only minor damage. Corners only very lightly bumped. The front hinge is holding on to the text block by a thread, which could go at any time. The rear hinge is completely detached from the text block. The cloth hinges themselves that hold the front and back covers to the spine, show no sign of splitting. The text block needs to be tightened but is holding together except for page 257-258 which is detached and pages 259-(262) which are holding on by several threads and have some minor edge wear. The front flyleaf has the remainder of a bird stamp that has been glued on. There is a tape stain running from the last page of the book on to the rear pastedown. Please see the photographs, which can be enlarged and are part of the description. This is guaranteed to be as described and pictured and is returnable within 14 days if it is not.

All 24 plates, including the title page, are present, and the two plates, at pages 34 and 92, the ones that are two of the points of a first state, are well attached and in nice condition. I have included photos of the two. Seven plates are detached and have some edge wear, but nothing bad; I have included a photo of perhaps the worst one. The plate at page 228, while still attached, has a 1 1/4 inch tear at the gutter. Two plates are partially detached. Except for what I have mentioned and pictured, the plates are in nice condition. So are the pages, which have no tears, coloring or penciling. No ownership or other markings.

The pages facing the pastedowns are blank, as they should be. There is no rubber stamped copyright notice on the back of the title page.

The second state point for the binding is the Geo. M. Hill plainly printed in red at the bottom of the spine. A first state would be printed in green. The book in this auction has a second state or "B" binding. There is also a "C" binding with a more elaborate style of printing. "

Here is a run down of the first state points. The plate at page 34 has two blue blobs on the face of the moon, making it appear to have horns. The plate at page 92 has red shading along the horizon. Both of these points were removed in the second state, although there are some copies having one first state plate and one second state plate.

Page (2): the publisher's advertisement facing the title page is enclosed in a box; Page 14, line 1 has "low wail on"; Page 81, fourth line from the bottom has "peices"; Page (227), line 1 begins "While Tin Woodman...."; The colophon at the end of the book is set in eleven lines and set in a box; Perfect type on the last lines of pages 100 and 186.

1909 YAMA YAMA LAND, WIZARD of OZ ERA COPY-CAT FANTASY, 16 DRAMATIC COLOR PLATES

"Yama Yama Land: Where Everything is Different", written by Grace Duffie Boylan, and illustrated by the Noted Artist, Edgar Keller.

It is one of the most noteworthy examples of imitation of L. Frank Baum's Wizard of OZ Books.

Boylan was a friend of both Baum and of W. W. Denslow. Her story bears a remarkable resemblance to Baum's fourth Oz book, the 1908 Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz.   Boylan's heroine Sylvie enters a magical underground realm through a fissure in the Earth that opens during an earthquake. In Yama Yama Land she encounters cities of lost things, which suggests the Valley of Lost Things found in Baum's 1902 Dot and Tot of Merryland.

Also unusual is that it was published by Reilly & Britton, Baum's Wizard of OZ publisher, which advertised Boylan's Novel as "An Extravaganza in Book Form for Children" -- suggesting that Baum approved of it's publication.

In the century since its first publication, the book has attracted attention and praise more for Keller's illustrations than for Boylan's story. Keller's illustrations include fourteen color plates, two of which are double-page spreads..   VERY DRAMATIC!!

SCARCE FIRST EDITION, with Pictorial front pastedown on deep pumpkin cloth, Near Fine, slight tip wear, very lovely.

Interior Complete in 200 Pages, with ALL DEEPLY RICH COLOR PLATES and numerous B& W and Duotone in text illustrations as well.    A GREAT EXAMPLE!!

NOTE:  In the century since its first publication, the book has attracted attention and praise more for Keller's Art Work than for Boylan's story.

Many believe Boylan's novel was inspired by a comic song of her era, "The Yama Yama Man" (1908).

Nearly $500 for this innocuous little Cubby Bear book. Had I stumbled upon it in a book store would have passed on it for $20.  I dunno why the high price; assuming the California angle was the major contributor.

Can anyone else help rationalize this one?

TOLKIEN THE HOBBIT 1937 UK RARE ORIGINAL FIRST PRINTING! A COLLECTOR'S DREAM!

"JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit

Allen & Unwin First Impression 1937

One of 1500 copies printed

GREAT DISPLAY / GIFT / HEIRLOOM / INVESTMENT

ON EBAY ONE TIME ONLY - IF THERE IS NO BUYER, I WILL HOLD UNTIL THE MOVIE

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Hobbit was published in 1937 and went for sale on September 21st and forever changed literature.   Middle earth was created, setting the basis for The Lord of the Rings and the fantasy genre in general.  This, the first of Tolkien's books, has a contribution to society that is second to none. The genious and concept was so original that Tolkien's masterpiece is regarded as one of the greatest works in literature.

This is a rare find on auction for a few reasons.  First of all, only 1500 copies were printed - 75 years ago.  As The Hobbit was very popular with young readers, and because of the huge popularity, very few of these 1500 copies have survived.  Often, if a copy actually comes up for sale, it sadly has been rebound in leather.  Rebound copies can be found (as the boards are in such a poor state / and often the interior of the book as well that rebinding is the only option) and still list for sale at $25,000.00 - depending on condition.   This is often the only way to acquire such a copy as most owners of The Hobbit in its original boards are not very willing to part with them - they are "precious".

This - of course - meets all the first issue criteria for a first printing.  For more information, look at the website: http://www.tolkiencollector.com/hobbhist.htm

Condition of the Book:

The copyright page shows the only publication of 1937.  All 11 plates are in black and white.  The only writing in the book is a small and tasteful name in pencil and stating its from K.M.L. 1938 - very small and outside of the map.   I just had the spine rebacked by an amazing professional and now it is tight and straight.  He also did some very minor touch ups to the corners to make them square.  There are no missing pages or plates; the binding is square and tight; there is little to no soiling!  As the pictures show, the front and back boards show quite well - just as a collector would love to find it.   It is now protected in a facsimile dust jacket.  Also, with this auction, the book is further protected in a lovely slipcase made especially for the first edition.  The papers and boards were made with the highest acid free material and the spine is of moroccan leather - gold gilt and made to match the original book.  The slipcase is a beautiful compliment to a beautiful first impression.

Finally, of course, Peter Jackson's amazing The Lord of the Rings trilogy did not disappoint...Return of the King won 11 Oscars!!  Every endorsment franchise, advertising agency, basically everywhere one turns will be filled with Hobbits very soon (December 2012 to be exact for part 1 - but the hype will start much sooner) as this will be the movie of the year!  It goes without saying that the value of this book will at least double when that action heats up.  A lot of the cast is returning and the entire world will be all about hobbits!  One will not be able to obtain a copy like this for less than $20,000.00 by next summer and it will only go up dramatically from that in the fall!"

A nice Beatrix Potter book, one not found too often on eBay, especially so in DJ. Be sure to read about the interesting provenance of this book.

1929 Beatrix Potter First Edn in scarce DJ The Fairy Caravan McKay Philadelphia

"Scarce Breatrix Potter Philadelphia-Published Semi-Autobiographical, Illustrated Short Story, The Fairy Caravan, Rare In Publisher's Dust Jacket

You would have to spend $1,445 or $2,000 to purchase the only other copies of this scarce Beatrix Potter first edition in the original dust jacket we found available for sale online:

The Fairy Caravan, by Beatrix Potter (Philadelphia: David McKay 1929), first edition, 6 5/8" x 8 1/2" tall hardbound, 225pp., in original green cloth boards with gilt lettering and design to spine and color pictorial label to front cover, profusely illustrated (six full-page color plates, and 20 full-page and 42 smaller B&W illustrations), in publisher's original color pictorial dust jacket. Spine is ever-so-slightly cocked, and the covers, though quite bright (thanks to use of the dust jacket), are a bit rubbed and edgeworn, with some light staining to the rear cover at the top, and a smudge on the pictorial title label on the front cover. Inside, the book is exceptionally clean and flawless, except for the stamp and signature of well-known and somewhat infamous Indiana collector Earl Ford McNaughton on the front pastedown (see the note below). Otherwise, a very good copy of this issue in a rare dust jacket, which has sunning to the spine, soiling, chipping, abrasions, a 5" tear to the rear of the jacket (with a crude tape repair to the reverse) and a tear along the front hinge separating the jacket into two pieces, nevertheless nicely preserved and displayed in a Brodart™ archival sleeve. Collectors' references: See Linder p. 292-5, Quinby 29a.

Long after Beatrix Potter stopped writing the Peter Rabbit series, during a period in her life when she was primarily writing and drawing for her own pleasure, and devoting most of her energies to a highly successful venture breeding and raising Herdwick sheep, she was approached by American publisher Alexander McKay of David McKay Co. in Philadelphia. McKay persuaded Potter to let him publish a long short story she had been writing for years about a guinea pig. Potter had great difficulty in finishing the drawings for the book, which she named The Fairy Caravan, her eyesight by then not what it once was, but they are her usual endearing work, and her prose is exceptional.

Though not a common Potter title, children throughout the ages have loved The Fairy Caravan. And Potter fans realize that The Fairy Caravan was somewhat autobiographical. The backdrop for the story, which follows the adventures of Tuppenny, a young guinea pig who runs away from home to join a travelling circus, is the woods and estate surrounding Graythwaite Hall in the Lake District, Cumbria, which were also a favourite walking spot for Wordsworth.

There is additional publishing "back-story" around this title, familiar to Potter collectors. Frederick Warne and Company, her publisher for prior books, were less than happy about the American publication of a Potter book, but she considered the title too personal to be published in England, and the trade edition wasn't released there until long after her death. Yet the lawyers had concerns about the strength of the copyright in England, so she had 100 copies specially bound and self published in the UK to protect her interests there. One of those copies is a "holy grail" acquisition for a Potter collector ($8,000 for the only copy available online).

Provenance - about the prior owner: Earl Ford McNaughton was until November 2004 president of the First National Bank of Fremont, near Ft. Wayne, Indiana, when he was ousted for mismanagement of the bank his family had founded in the late 1800s, and his dealings with fraudulent loans. McNaughton was an obsessive collector of antiques and antiquarian books, and the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reported his bank owned more than 10% of its assets in these collectibles, extremely unusual for an FDIC-insured bank. Since he was forced to resign at the bank, most of these antiques, including this first edition, were placed up for sale."

EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON Kay Nielsen FAIRY TALE 1st NEAR FINE dj

1ST AMERICAN EDITION - 25 TIPPED-IN ILLUSTRATIONS - DJ

EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON

"Original c.1922 First American Edition of “East of the Sun and West of the Moon” Illustrated by Kay Nielsen  :: Published by George Doran Company: New York :: Measures 6 1/2 x 9 1/4" :: Complete with 204 Pages + 25 Illustrations.

NEAR FINE CONDITION: A tightly bound volume, clean pages throughout, suprisingly minimal wear to dust jacket for age, complete with all pages and illustrations. Overall an excellent copy of this rare title.

Presented here is Illustrator Kay Nielsen's most famous work East of the Sun and West of the Moon. Published by George Doran Company, this is the first American Edition of the work complete with 25 Tipped-In illustrations (one more than the UK Edition) and bound in the very rare original Dust Jacket.

Fifteen old Norwegian folk-tales from Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe have been selected and magnificently portrayed by Nielson. Only his second book commission, this collection of paintings earned him enormous public recognition and equal standing with Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham as a leading children’s book illustrator. In these elegant paintings, he combined qualities of Oriental design with those unique features of his native Scandinavia: The melancholic mystery of a bleak Nordic twilight seemed to cast a magical spell on the images themselves.

"These captivating old tales at once exotic and somehow familiar, of princes and princesses, giants and mythic goats, all combine to give us a glimpse into the Norwegian imagination. And we cannot help but agree that: The quaintness, the tenderness, the grotesque yet realistic intermingling of actuality with supernaturalism, by which the original Norske folkeeventyr are characterized, will make an appeal to all, as represented in the pictures of Kay Nielsen. And these imperishable traditions, whose bases are among the very roots of all antiquity, are here reincarnated in line and colour, to the delight of all who ever knew or now shall know them." --Preface

This was one of only five books that Nielsen illustrated before going to work as an animator for Disney. If it were not for the outbreak of war that year, there is no doubt that Nielsen would have continued to produce many more of these remarkable paintings for children, to establish him as a great master of the Northern fairy tale. Widely acknowledged as one of the most important and impressive books of the Golden Age of book illustration, this is a great rarity, especially in this wonderful original condition."

picture books/zlinda - Chris Van Allsburg was in town recently and signed (and dated his signature) of my first editions of Jumanji and Polar Express. How much of a difference does it make if a book is signed many years after it was published?

Obviously having the book signed during the year of publication would make the book more desirable than a later signing. I can't generalize the increase in collectibility or value.

Provenance is everything, so retain the flyer or photo of the Van Allsburg display card or receipt of your attendance or something which helps to authenticate the book signing.

The Van Allsburg Caldecott Medal books are highly collectible first editions, and he is not an extremely prolific book signer, so with authenticity, it should help the value.

Personally, I don't pay a premium for signed books unless there is some authenticity. Dr. Seuss signatures are notoriously forged, so the only Dr. Seuss signed books I mind are those signed numbered limited editions published late in his career.

When I met him, I asked Chris Van Allsburg about the title of his book Probuditi, which mean to wake up in Serbo-Croatian.  He confirmed that that is the meaning of the title.  He thought some people might get it from the name of the magician, but I didn't tell him that Lomax is not a common name recognizable as Serbian or Croatian.

In general, a non-personalized signature is better. Unless you are famous or have some connection to the publication of the book or to the author/illustrator.
