It depends on what type of USPS service was used, when the item was shipped, and what tracking shows, if anything.
Typically a parcel isn't considered lost until at least 21 days have passed. After that, you can file the claim; and if the parcel is truly considered lost by USPS, they'll pay the claim within a few days.
