Shipping rates: media mail vs first class

I recently started to sell some cd's and I usually just ship them using USPS media mail (2-8 days) package/thick envelopes. The postage is $2.53 plus 0.20 USPS tracking. These items are small enough where I can just slip them through my mail box and the mail carrier takes them.

I was looking at the USPS first class package (2-5 days) package/thick elvelope option and the postage is only $2.04 with free USPS tracking. I'm not too knowledable about shipping rates, so I was wondering why it would cost less for first class with a shorter delivery time than the media mail option that I have been using. Should I be using this option instead, and can I still put these items in my mail box for pick up or do I have to take it directly to the post office for first class.

Thank you in advance.

YES

It would be MUCH smarter to use First Class Parcel

Just be sure your package will qualify as a parcel

YES, You can still place them in the mail box for pickup

Delivery Confirmation is now called "Tracking"

BUT seems to still be Delivery Confirmation

Copy & Paste from USPS site >>

If you shipped with Express Mail®, you’ll get point-by-point tracking details. If you used another service—USPS Tracking™, Certified Mail™, Registered Mail™ —you’ll see when it went out for delivery.

So I can only use this shipping method if it is a parcel? I am just using flat bubble mailer envelopes since they are really the only thing small enough to fit into the mail box.

Up to about 6 oz., First Class is always cheaper than Media Mail.  That's because the minimum cost is for 1 oz. ($2.07 retail - package).

But Media Mail starts at $2.53 retail for up to 1 lb.

Online prepaid labels cost less than the retail rates.

A PARCEL (aka PACKAGE) need not be a box.  It can be an envelope IF the shape and dimensions qualify it as a PARCEL.

For First Class Mail, a bubble envelope weighing more than 3.5 oz. cannot be a letter.  A bubble envelope that is rigid or lumpy cannot be a flat.   What's left?  A parcel.

I suggest you consult the USPS rate charts and postage calculator for more information:
