I need to send some pictures to a seller to show them samples of what I need to see if they can make it for me.  How do I do that?

When you click the button in the listing to Ask Seller a Question, you can follow the path to send a message, but there is no opportunity to add a photo at that point.

When the seller responds, you will be able to reply within My Messages and can attach a photo at that point. eBay will host up to five photos per message at up to 1600 pixels on the long side and will send photo links to the seller. If you need to send more than 5 photos, simply reply as many times as needed.

To send and receive photos, both you and your recipient must have your eBay Communication preferences set to allow HTML (rather than plain text) messages since the photos will be linked into the message using HTML. That setting is under "Account".

To send a picture using Messages:

  1. Click the Attach Photos button in the message you're writing.
  2. Select the picture or pictures saved on your computer that you want to send. You can choose up to 5 pictures.
Note: pictures you send through Messages need to meet the following requirements:
    • They must be no larger than 5MB
    • Each must be at least 500 pixels on the smallest side (length or width)
    • Each must be in one of the following formats: JPG, BMP, GIF, PNG or TIF
  3. When you're finished writing your message, click the Send button.

You can't attach pictures to ebay messages.  So yes, you need their outside email.

http://answercenter.ebay.com/tip/Photos-Html/Sending-Pictures-Ebay/1000297912

This TIP explains two eBay techniques that do not require exposing private email addresses to unknowns:

1) how to send a Picture through eBay messages from normal email (avail since Mar 2011).

2) and how to send a Picture from within eBay messages (avail since Sep 2012).

In both cases, a picture can only be sent with a response, not in the initial contact. This cuts down on abuse of the system and confirms the other party wants to receive photos.

I would recommend you ask the seller for their personal e-mail address.

The pictures will be better and larger.
