partial refund

Buyer made payment with echeck.  Echeck cleared and item was shipped.  Postage paid by buyer was more than actual cost.  I want to issue refund of overpayment through paypal.  Can I just use the send money option to the buyer using his email, or does the echeck method preclude me sending refund through paypal?

go to your paypal account and find the transaction and click on details.  Their is a refund link in the middle of the page.  Just follow the prompts to issue the refund and get part of your paypal fees refunded at the same time.  Just be careful - the full amount of the transaction is in the amount box.  You have to highlight it and change it.

View PayPal transaction links from My eBay are often invalid.

I'd login directly

Use the Refund link on the Details page. Make sure you clear the full amount.

Never rely on eBay nor emails for accurate payment information.

You can refund an e-check transaction just as if it were any other PayPal transaction. Just go to "view PayPal transaction" then login to PayPal and go to Issue Refund. I always follow up with an e-mail to the customer to thank them again and tell them that the refund was issued and that PayPal will be e-mailing them shortly with the details.

If it has been less than 60 days since the buyer paid, you shouldn't refund using the send money tab.

Use the issue refund link located in the details of the buyer's payment transaction.  Input the amount you wish to refund.  Paypal will credit you back a prorated portion of the fee you paid them.  This refund amount will be deposited into the buyer's Paypal account balance.  They can spend it or use the Withdraw tab to send it back to their bank account.

Note that if a buyer uses a coupon or eBay Bucks in their payment, you will not be able to issue a partial refund.
