Does a buyer have to pay for return postage for a broken item?

I received my item and it had been broke due to the poor packaging it was sent In. The buyer has agreed to replace it, however I have been told I have to pay for the return postage of the item to them in Japan. Is this fair? As the item was broken as a result of the poor packaging?

Buyers pay return shipping. That's the policy. You can ask the seller if they will accept pictures to prove the damage. If the item is broken beyond repair it doesn't make sense to spend money to return it. Talk with the seller about it.

As for getting a replacement, if the seller packed poorly this time they may not do any better in sending the replacement item. Why not get a refund and be done with it?

you can ask the seller if she will accept a picture of the broken item as

proof , if she said yes you don't need to return and she can replace the broken item.
