What is the difference between a "Watch List" and a "Wish List?"

I put some items on a Watch List so I wouldn't lose them, and then I see that the "auctioneer" is thanking me for my bid. What gives?

Adding to the watchlist and the wish list do not result in a purchase.

Adding to the shopping cart does.

Maybe you hit the wrong button

A Watch list isn't bidding.  Did you bid?
