Cast Iron Buffalo Bank Real or ?

Hi,

I picked up this cast iron buffalo bank and trying to determine if this has some age to it or a new reproduction made to look old. He is 4 1/4" x 3" in height. No screw on the side, but there is a  piece sticking out. Also has two holes underneath.

In the last photo, I think I see some letters just to the left of the spike thing, maybe in a circle or maybe I'm  just seeing things.

I have found a few in this exact shape, painted red and one was white, No colour on this one, doesn't look like it ever had colour.

Any ideas or info greatly appreciated.

Repro, sorry.

It's a bank. It would have been made so that you could access the money, thus it should be held together with a screw. Also welding is indicative of recent production.

Recent as in 1950s-1970s

The extreme pitting does look sort of kewl

The piece sticking out  looks like a casting sprue, the overall casting appears to be a reject.Possibly a foundry worker took the piece home for his children.

Thanks for the info! I think this is the first cast iron bank I have come across so I wasn't sure what to look for age wise, but hopefully will know if I find another one.  While researching this I found a site that said if there is red rust it will be a reproduction, and this has red rust.

Thanks Holly, I couldn't figure out what the spike thing was:smileyhappy:

I'm late to the party, I have sold and collect a lot of cast iron banks, and I have to agree, this is a reproduction.

The protrusion is not the sprue

The sprue would have been on the inside or edge

Red rust only means relatively recent rust, it does not rule out age

Your piece is likely at least 30 years old, probably 50

Thanks for the clarification on the red rust terry! Do you know what the spike thing is? Maybe a mistake?

With the severe corrsion which produced all the bumps, it may be an outgrowth of the steel screw

The was obiously buried in a damp environment for quite a while
