Antiques?

Because I am interested, I searched "antique sunglasses" on ebay. I was surprised that almost 1/2 items with keyword  "antique sunglasses" were actually BRAND NEW sunglasses. I am somewhat confused because I thought this was against eBay policy. Many of these sellers are "Top Rated" eBay sellers too. Any ideas? Thanks

Try putting the term in quotes like this:  "antique sunglasses"   eBay's search engine is, um, not the best.

It is like the old west of sunglasses, what I don't understand is why you believe that these are not antique, as far as I know there does not appear to be any disparity, nor am I aware that one can only call an antique if it is a 100 years old or older, yet on the other hand there has been no one that can show that one can only claim to be an antique if it was 100 or older, seems to me that they, the dealers can indeed call these antique, Does anyone have anything in writing that says the item must be a certain age before it can be claimed as an antique.

What "these" are you talking about?  The "these" the original poster saw when he searched on antique sunglasses without the quotes or the "these" you saw (I am guessing here) when you searched on "antique sunglasses" with the quotes?

When you quote me, it looks like you are addressing the message to me.  I don't have any opinion one way or the other on whether the sunglasses are antiques.  I was just trying to help the OP.

I donno . . . can you re-write this in a way that people can understand what you are saying?

To the OP, people flat out lie all the time.

eBay doesn't care, as long as they get their Final Value Fee.

Antiques?

The word "antique" acquired a meaning in American law when it was ruled that items made before 1830 could be imported to the USA without duty being paid because they would be obsolete, antiquated, and not competing with fledgling American industrial products. 1830 thus became the somewhat arbitrary date for defining "antiques' in the British Antiques Trade; American buyers wanted goods made before 1830 which did not attract duty. This date became hallowed by tradition and eyebrows were raised if an antiques dealer displayed articles made after 1830. It was really only in recent decades that this was finally abandonned by the most fuddy-duddy shops in the face of the successive fashions for collecting Victoriana, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Retro.

I don't mean that shops specialising in early antiques are fuddy duddy, just that the convention of 1830 was adhered to by many with little reason beyond the tax rule.

1830 also marks the date, more or less, when furniture started to be made using machinery/mechanization. Before that date, it was all hand done.  1830 is the cutoff date for "period furniture" in the trade for that reason and also because after about 1830 the styles were "recycled" untill the art nouveau and art deco or art moderne movement.

No, eBay doesn't police this because "antique' is also a finish or color like "antique brass finish"

On the left column you can narrow your search to antique and collectible categories, you can also use the Advanced search to exclude sellers who show up in those categories selling new items.

Click Advanced to the right of the Search button

Enter keywords, if you have yet to make a search (that may carry over)

At: Sellers
tick Only Show items from
chose button: Specific sellers (enter seller's user IDs)
chose dropdown : Exclude
Enter sellers names separated by a comma.

Yes, wasn't a veneer-cutting machine invented around then allowing cheap paper-thin veneers? People used to say that that ruined furniture but it made furniture available at a lower price to a large new market. High class furniture continued to be made which was long ignored until research after ww2 revealed the quality of much Victorian and William iv furniture.

Veneers are  extremely difficult to restore , they are just not worth the amount of time and effort to brink them back to life and make them presentable, if one can pic up a clean piece with no separation, nicks and such they are pretty but absolutely not the same as when working with a solid piece of wood.

Yes. I remember in the 1980s seeing formerly veneered bombé pieces that had been "tanked", veneer removed, and the complex substructure displayed as a decorative effect. Presumably restoration had not been a viable option.

I totally agree, it is quite frustrating and hard to search for true vintage or antiques, when all the brand new stuff from China etcera are hogging the WRONG category... I wanted to see if I could find some vintage print pillow covers... almost all were brand new...
What is up with that... and can't really figure out how to even contact eBay with complaint... no drop down for such when going thru the contact process... what a waste of time trying to do both things...
