"Dead as a doornail"

I've used that expression since the middle of the last century but I have no clue why or where it might have started.  I didn't even know exactly what a "doornail" is.

A quick bit of google searching gives interesting factoids but no real information.

 There's a reference to it in print in 1350:  "For but ich haue bote of mi bale I am ded as dorenail."

At my Christmas lunch yesterday, if I do say so myself, I looked drop dead gorgeous.  However, I got dead drunk and today I feel like dead meat.  But since I am dead set against telling the gory details, the only way you will find out is over my dead body!
